Upgrade the tuners. The only real problem with a squire is the cheap hardware wears out. The rest of the guitar is decent. Some people who like to customize their guitars buy used Squires for $25 and replace everything except the neck and body. It's made in China... using American specifications. Same with Epiphone and any other instrument. It's not the country that's the problem, it's the designers.

@@KinkyNothing truth be told, regardless of implementation, a blend pot (or that stupid touch thing) doesn't work very well on guitar, as in you won't get many extra useful sounds. I actually added a blend pot to my strat which allows me to seemlessly blend from from pickup A to AB to B when the 5way switch is in position 2, 3(neck+bridge instead of middle via push pull) and position 4; aaaand I must say, it simply doesn't really add much sound-wise. It's way less powerful than the blend knob on a bass in terms of palette of useable sounds.

My favorite sounding and most versatile guitar I’ve played is my 1988 Ibanez 540P (not the Pii) starting in 1986 and being most notable used on the 540 R/P/S in 1987 and early 1988 models, they used a toggle to activate each pickup in addition to humbucker in the bridge being able to split meaning for the time and even now a days, you can do stuff like split your bridge pickup and activate your neck (a single coil) for example. Combine that with a capacitor to make the lows not so prominent when the volume is rolled down… pretty advanced stuff for 1986-1988. Shame they never used it again. Them as in Ibanez.

How about the Emerald Virtuo? No hotswappable pickups but it's a slimline acoustic, with bridge and neck humbuckers, and piezos in the bridge. Not only do you get MIDI output from the piezos, but if you insert a stereo jack you get the piezos on one channel and the humbuckers on the other. Also it's made from carbon fiber so it doesn't care about temperature or humidity. I definitely have one on my wishlist

1200-2500 used and sometimes new. if you want the touch selector then you can find them like new or even new on reverb for like 3k. another option is to buy a freeway switch which is like 50-60 dollars and install it into one of their trinity models or even a mary model. I have one with the touch selector and it's great. I have no complaints other than the touch selector isn't the best to use for gigs so you would want to probably go the freeway switch route if you want to do that or just stick with the version with a switch
