When Geddy Lee started just going out with samples of his Oberheims, Moogs and Jupiters I was heartbroken… I feel like in the early 90s through the early 2000s synthesizer music was looked at as an outlier, a misstep and a novelty that needed reaction against … and in turn there was this deep disrespect and dismissal of these amazing instruments, and this unique time in music; Where rock and pop was trying to explore the cutting edge of technology. For me that is some the greatest and most unique music… when bands like Rush and Genesis were listening to artists like Ultravox, Laurie Anderson and Giorgio Moroder… And rock radio hade Billy Squier records with memorable synth parts… and Queen discovered the OB-X… And Eddie Van Halen was writing hits with arpeggiated bass lines and Oscillator sync leads louder than the guitar parts. It was a wild time and I’m happy to finally see the respect come back around again. Sorry for the stream of consciousness rant😂😂😂

I love the fact we live in a golden age of hardware! I have no problem with software as it was all I had for ages. Then I got my first synth, a Moog GM luckily enough. I got that for the heritage and it's just fantastic. The sound the feel of the thing makes playing is a pleasure! So then I got a SubH and they work together like a dream. Now I'm putting together a eurorack system. I have definitely got the bug!😂

Yesss, even with the Arturia synth bundle which models many famous synths, it’s not the same as turning the knobs yourself and hearing the instrument respond!

Yes true. I sometimes think of letting my Sub37 go because it's kinda limited but I remember that I couldnt do without those few things it does. It does them so well.

One instrument in my allotment comes right down to this point when it pertains to how I’ve played it, the Moog Theremini. It’s got a boatload of presets on it, reflecting on the engine inside of it which is from Animoog. However, I have only played one present, the first one. It sounds the most like a traditional Theremin model, even though all it gives off is a kind of filtered sawtooth wave that can’t be edited (to the best of my knowledge). I would rather have it and make one mistake after another without proper temperament of the pitch (making it most like the classic article) than to mess around with any of the other presents.

When these came our people said they were not real and that people needed the classic forms of instruments. Now we sit here and say the same words but we have accepted these things. In 30 years time people will weep for the glory days of synths we are in now. When a kid with pocket change could have a virtual moog and just go absolutely nuts with it. Stop chasing the dreams of the past and revel in the instruments of our time. You can’t make art from the perspective of someone else who lived 40 years ago. You are alive now in the world as it is. Make your world sing.

The only thing I have against presets is, there is always a couple of banks of them you can’t overwrite😂…. The ONLY 2 things good about presets is: 1. You CAN learn a little from them. 2. A preset can be inspiring, hopefully enough to cause me to write a song, then modify the preset to actually strengthen the songs Sonic portrait. I’m using those concepts to help me overcome the limitations of being a guitarist composing songs on synths….😊😺

I’m not sure what Tony is trying to say here, but I’m I don’t think I agree with it I mean, if what he’s saying is true then there’s only ever gonna be a handful of synthesizers out there that you could consider real and as an instrument, and that’s just not right. 😊

I have a Moog Prodigy….. nice instrument, and Loved by many synth folks…. But I gotta say: The flexibility of routing matrixes and other modern innovations have really made me a believer in today’s modern synth manufacturers like Doepfer and Arturia and UDO…. I own some Arturia gear and I am Very Pleased with the builds and voicing and ease of use !!!!!!! The one BIG problem is I am a Guitarist turned to the Darkside, I bought synths…..😂🎹🎛💛😺🎸
