Every couple months or so, I end up coming back to The Mountain Goats, and I consume content like a junkie, digging for scraps. It's insane how much his music affects me. And every time I come back, I find some old track that had gone by completely missed that hits me in exactly the way I need right then. This time, it was a live cut of "Maybe Grow Wings", and now this. I'm looking forward to discovering some ancient gem next time that perfectly fits me as I am then too.

so true. John's song writing is incredible. he has so many lines that just blow my hair back. make me think. make me feel. haunt me. and then just eat me from the inside out. Truly, he is one of the world's beautiful monsters.

May I offer up Rockin' Rockin' Pet Store? Or perhaps Beat The Devil (though you've likely heard this one as I think it was re-released on the website and got popular that way)

I was recently discussing the new Mountain Goats album and remarked how John Darnielle is the best lyricist alive and quite possibly ever. I could listen to a song of his a million times and every time find something new about the song that I must have missed the other 999,999,999 times I listened to it. His music is pure poetry and his lyrics are as well. Such beautiful music, beautiful words. We're lucky we get to listen to this breathtaking story teller.

Get Lonely really could have benefited from an upbeat number like this.

When I rose from a heavy sleep I was stepping lightly And I put on my gray suit And the matching fedora Ready to face the world Fairly nearly ready Came down the hallway Looked in the mirror I'm gonna break something I'm gonna break something today And sweep all the pieces away And I stood before the mirror then Like I was waiting for a phone call Squinting like a lost traveler in a thick fog But nothing clear came into view Except for you Just off in the distant horizon Something hidden in your hand I'm gonna break something I'm gonna break something today And sweep all the pieces away And so I pulled my hat brim Down over my eyes And preened and posed and tried my New self on for size Then I was out the door In the faint winter sunlight Just a number in the crowd Smiling at everyone Ah but who'd smile back At a face like that I'm gonna break something I'm gonna break something today And sweep all the pieces away

It really makes me wonder why two people came all this way into the deep crevasses of the MG archive to dislike this.

Genuinely can't fathom why this was left off Get Lonely. It's easily my favourite unreleased song of theirs, and probably would have been my favourite song on Get Lonely! The second verse captures the unique anger of the immediate period post-breakup perfectly: And I stood before the mirror then Like I was waiting for a phone call Squinting like a lost traveler in a thick fog But nothing clear came into view Except for you Just off in the distant horizon Something hidden in your hand I'm gonna break something I'm gonna break something today And sweep all the pieces away

No. Forum-only release, and the forums aren't there anymore. Most of those online releases are relatively tricky to find original copies of nowadays. Easiest route is transcoding the audio from a YT video if you want a copy.

Yeah, I hate internet released songs, if I’m gonna buy music I want the physical copy (just received The Hardcore Ed of ILwD!!!). So for some of the album I know I’ll never be able to buy I usually copy them to a cassette.
