There’s something about the pause between “and I hope you die” “I hope we both die.” It feels like the person realizes that the death of the one they’re singing about won’t be enough to erase whatever happened, and that they themself would also have to die to move past it. I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving those lines.

I disagree, I’ve experienced that feeling plenty of times and normally that one is accompanied by something resembling joy. Winter mornings in the Northeast are a bitch and cold as hell but also beautiful. This song on the other hand is like triple distilled despair, and not of the self harm kind. Like you have the pain inside you, and want to spread it as much as you can before leaving.

So I’m currently trying to get out of a toxic relationship, and this song made me really put into perspective how toxic the relationship actually was. I’ve listened to this song god knows how many times because of how relatable the message is. I’ve broken down because of it. But I’m almost out. I’m so close to not relating to this song. Wish me luck, comment section. Im working off the confidence to finally cut it off. Update: we broke up! It was complicated, difficult, and stressful but I don’t regret it at all. And if anyone else dealt with something like this I am so so sorry and just know that you are strong. You can do this. It may seem impossible but don’t give up.

This song reminds me of that longing for things to end horribly and bitterly because that’s what you’re used to. The only security you have in your relationships is knowing they will fail, and when it does, you can say “I knew it. I knew they wouldn’t stay”. This song is that feeling. That feeling of knowing you ruin things because that’s all you know to do. You ruin your connections because you can’t keep them healthy because you’re scared they’ll actually WORK. You feel unloveable, so you make sure everyone knows you are, and if they disagree, they won’t for long.

You wrote this a while ago, but I wanted to comment that you’re so right. Being abandoned scarring you to the point of you fucking things up by yourself because you don’t want to be the one being left alone. You want to be the one who’s leaving first. _"Your mother and I have decided to stay together, if only for appearances. The last thing we want people to think is that we don't care about our own kids. That's one fact that's none of their business."_ Moral Orel is a hilarious show. Meromorphic has a great video about the whole thing, front to back. I recommend everyone watch the show, then watch his video on it. But hilarity aside... being abused as a kid by heavily religious parents (and now being a father myself), Moral Orel showed me how to put a lot of things that happened in my own childhood into some perspective. And I'm more reassured that I'm doing much better nowadays, both with myself and with my own children. In all honesty, I was so glad when they let us know Orel was finally happy, in the end. Stupid show to get all emotional about, fake characters and all, but idk... it got to me sometimes.

I'm 6 years old sitting in my dads car as he drives me to the meeting place halfway between where my mom lives and my dad lives. We had an okay weekend, he rented movies we watched together and we tried to play some video games but the skill difference between a 6 year old and a 28 year old is pretty drastic. The divorce is still pretty recent and it's hitting me really hard. My dad puts in one of his CDs of music he likes. He made about a dozen of them and this sing was on the one he put on that day. I didn't get the lyrics, but I really liked the music. It sounded so jaunty and happy. I learned the lyrics pretty quick since it wasnt a long CD we listened to it a few times during the 90 minute drive. We finally arrive at a gas station in Chehalis and I hug my dad goodbye as I get into my moms car. All I could think about was this song. I start humming it and after 20 minutes I sing some of the lyrics to myself. My mom is very shocked and asked where I heard those words said. I told her it was a song my dad was listening to. Without knowing it I caused another fight and the rest of the car ride was very quiet.

I love how you can really see the connection the couple has. It’s like they fit together only as a defiance against everyone else. A real us against the world. But at the same time neither want any of it and want everything to blow up so it can just be over. “Our friends say it’s darkest before the sun rises but we’re pretty sure they’re all wrong. “ I feel like this a lot. Perhaps not the was the song describes. I don’t have a bad partner. But I just kinda want things to burn away, so I don’t have to go on anymore. To hell with people who try to impose themselves in my life. To hell with people who insist on forgiving me when I don’t want them in my life. To hell with bubbly anecdotes for a carefree life. I’m here living out my misery the best I can, hoping one day it puts me somewhere I can just be me. Life doesn’t do checks and balances on happiness. Enough negative marbles don’t turn in a large good marble on the other side. Life doesn’t work that way. This song really gets my feels, but it’s also real enough that I can laugh.

This song is almost like an abusive relationship. The main guy is outing his anger for being in such an unlovable relationship. He hates himself and was suicidal to begin with so its only fuel for the flame. He wants to die, but he wants to take her down with him.

I know y'all don't really care, and it's more of something I need to vent. Since this will probably get lost in the sea of comments, it seems like a good place to put this Parents finalized their divorce papers today. Since they split - about 8 months ago - I knew they weren't going to get back together. My mom seemed much more like herself without my dad around. And my dad... He's still unhappy. He tried so hard to hold on to their relationship, but it wasn't healthy for either of them. I'm not mad. I don't see this as something to get mad about. I don't have any strong emotions either way about it. This song was really good for me when they fought often. It was the angriest song - in my middle schooler's brain - about something like divorce. They never talked about it, but I could tell it was coming. My mom wouldn't kiss my dad anymore, my dad slept in a different room - etc. I used to blame my mom for leaving my dad. I thought it was her choice and that she just didn't love him anymore. I didn't understand how deep it went, how much they'd hurt each other. It was both of them, my dad wasn't as perfect as I thought he was, and my mom isn't the monster I'd made her out to be. They're just people. They'd both fucked up. I'm about to leave for college, and the only thing that really worries me is my little sister. She's doing her best, but it affects her way more than it does me or my older siblings. I hope she'll be alright. Anyway, that's it. Sorry about putting this here but I couldn't think of anywhere else where it would belong. I'm just relistening to this for nostalgia purposes

You have such an amazing perspective on darkness in your life. Keep growing and getting stronger, be patient with your sister she may not be ready to understand right now but when she is she'll value your perspective. Was looking for this comment. Darnielle was apparently quite confused as to why Faulk would want to use this to end his show, but as a fan of TMG and a fan of YTW since the pilot episode: it's perfect! Gretchen and Jimmy were minutes away from becoming "The Alpha Couple" but broke away from that path and the ill-advised wedding. I describe the show as "a romantic comedy for people who hate romantic comedies" and the song completely fits with that whole vibe. I literally yelled "Yes!" when I heard the opening notes. Such a perfect way to end the show.

To me this song is about not wanting to be okay. It’s a crazy feeling, I’ve been really sick mentally and physically and got better and then worse, while it is good being okay, being sick and unhappy is such a rush. It felt like I was drowning in my on toxicity and self hatred and I loved it. Of corse im trying to get better but being sick feels so strange. Not good but not particularly bad. It’s like it’s addictive. It’s like when when you play a horror game, it makes you scared and makes you wanna curl up in a ball. That’s what it feels like. Paired with the toxic relationship I think this song is perfect.

Jesus. Christ I’ve never had any comment so spot on both with a similar experience/feelings and as what I also see the song as for myself- I do want to get better yes, but deep down I know there will always be a side of me wanting to stay at my worst because of the rush. It’s not even that people treat me better because of how sick I am both mentally and physically, in fact most treat me terribly because of it, I just feel as if I’ve known that state of my being for so long that I can’t just go to being healthy and happy all of a sudden.

Idk why but I'm so not used to healthy relationships and I like feeling sad sometimes, I'm so surprised whenever a friend of mine randomly says they like me (romantically and platonically) and I just can't comprehend someone actually likes me for being me sometimes. When I did get a actual romantic healthy relationship I didn't feel comfortable and sorta pushed them away. I don't know why it's like this and I feel bad but I push away the people who like me the most and it's so weird because I do love them but I'm just not used or comfortable with it
