This song is a fucking masterclass in storytelling that's both personal and generalizable. I look over these lyrics word-by-word and I can't figure out how he does it. I can't figure out how he communicates personal anger, joy, and relief in a way that feels earned and applicable to my own life.

Pro wrestling always escaped me. It made no sense to me why so many of my friends as a boy liked it. I think of Joe Terranova and the lousy homelife that he had.... a divorced spazzy kid on ritalin who lived with his mom who worked nights as a nurse at a nursing home with no dad around. After hearing this album, it made so much sense to me. "I need justice in my life, here it comes." I feel for that kid.

I guess the intersection of people who listen to The Mountain Goats and know who Ray Rosas, Ryan Nemeth, and Famous Dick Wrestler Joey Ryan are is pretty slim, but I'm pretty jazzed to be part of that club. This album is so good, and captures a lot of what makes pro wrestling so great. It's such a misunderstood art, and so many people miss what's beautiful and poetic about it. Remember, support your local indy promotion!

A few years ago, Chavo Guerrero Jr was attending a convention in my town. Signing autographs, taking pictures etc. I desperately wanted to have him sign my vinyl copy of "Beat the Champ." I take so much inspiration from JD. Not in the same way Guerrero inspired him back then--I guess for me that would have been Michael Stipe or a few of my own 80's WWF heroes--but rather that, after umpteen albums, he's made one of his best ever with 'Beat the Champ'. Seriously genius songwriting. 'Unmasked!' is my favorite off the album, so few can write like that. It's nice to think that we actually get better at whatever our passion is.
