This is one of my favorite videos of all time and I give it all the credit for taking me from a 100-105 to the 80s. I find the random thoughts of the cameraman very interesting. He's getting the best advice in the world he's ever heard but it's going right over his head because he has all these other silly thoughts from random BS Golf magazines. It's absolutely fascinating to watch this. If I was ever a golf instructor, I'd show this to my pupils and focus on the interaction between the two.

If you are hitting it sideways I would be looking at two things. First is grip formation and pressure and second is your awareness of the toe of the club. To control the blade angle requires an awareness and feel for the toe of the club. If you know where the toe is you know what square at the bottom is. I learned this a long time ago but longtime pro Del Starks put it best . He said "Those in the know swing the toe. Those with no feel swing the heel." Get that and you will hit it solid.

Yes. Keep that feeling going right through transition. The feeling never reverses. This keeps you inside as you move targetward with the lower body motivated from the ground up. The clockwise pressure just eventually disipates as the mass/pressure leaves the right foot and the right foot everts.

@maginick24 That is a good way to feel this. What is staying stable and centered is the shoulder harness around the vertebrae between the shoulder blades. The spine reorientates but the top remains pretty stable. Thew movement is through the middle. The Navel. This puts you where you need to be to move through the ball. It puts you into position to strike the ball.
@sevam1872
15 жыл бұрын
The reason I want the shift "through the ball" is because once I lose the pressure in the right side the stall begins and I have lost my ability to both push and pull the clubshaft. The only thing left to keep the clubhead going at that point is a flip. By retaining pressure in the shaft I also have better control of the blade angle. Power through momentum of the body is not the point. It is all about preserving leverage to swing against. Power is nonetheless the byproduct.

I believe pre setting the weight into the right side ( r.h.player) is the key to a good move into the ball. Hogan and Moe Norman did this. It still requires rhythm and timing, the two things most people struggle with. Love the dog!!
@sevam1872
15 жыл бұрын
A slight stall is sending the club out a little over it. Just keep that ability to push in the ball of the right foot until the hands are passing the right toe. You will stay better inside this way and the release will be smoother and more natural and easier to control. You want your speed at the bottom. That happens when the last bit of leverage leaves as the hands move past the right big toe. You want to be moving left while always maintaining the ability to push from the right.

I can do it either way but I like to put some early inertia into the clubhead with a slight body shift away from the target so that I have somethinge to react to. When I do that the base of the spine moves away from the target and then returns toward the target in transition. So the spine tics and tocs. I can also at address preset the spine where I want it at the end of the backswing. If I do that then there is only the toc part. Basically I swing spine and shift the axis on every pass.

My left wrist is in a flat to bowed position at impact and that position depends somewhat on the shot that I am trying to play. I do not set it that way throughout the backswing. It moves into this position on the downswing because I am rotating the handle and therefor also the clubhead slightly as my hands drop and the right arm extends.
@daveincl
15 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response. On the downswing, I would describe the feeling as though my left elbow points toward the target when the club is parallel to the ground (this is where I feel "stuck" and feel like I am holding the angle too long and will not release to square up the blade) and then elbow moving left of the target line (not down). This parallel position to the ground through impact is where I am lost. Not sure about the right shoulder movement in the downswing. Thanks!

Good question, because the left leg can do several different things. If you are Moe the lead knee just keeps leading targetward. The same with Byron Nelson. If you are Ben Hogan, however, the left butt cheek moves back and to the left somewhat as the left hip joint acts like the hinge on a door. As you move left the pressure is rotational resistance followed by a hard turn to the left in the entire left leg once it is has recieved that mass. I feel it more in the left leg than in the core.

It is hard to advise on this without seeing your swing, but I would say that compressing on the backswing is a better idea than standing up. My right knee may straighten a bit on some shots but I never allow it to lock out.
@sevam1872
15 жыл бұрын
That is right. The feeling of that rotational pressure does not reverse in transition. It leaves when the weight leaves and the last of the weight leaves the right side rather late in this motion. You are moving left in the downswing but you achieve the move to the target by moving the middle of the body back to the target. The mass follows this. When the pressure leaves the right leg the right heel releases towards the target as it rises.
@TimFlaherty

Excellent Mike, can you describe the "Two Way Move" or "transition move" a little more where by the clubhead is still moving toward the target while the lower body is driving to the target? This is what I am working on the most right now.

The golfswing is a two sided affair. No doubt and the left side is very important. I never leave my left side completely either. In fact I also never lift my left heel which as you note Hogan actually did with the driver. I always want to retain some pressure left so that the left leg never disengages. It has to remain engaged or it becomes a wet noodle and is unreceptive in transition and cannot support the downswing.

Thanks for sharing your golf knowledge. I fight holding on too long and have a hard time squaring up the club face. I feel like I am stuck and my shoulder rotatation is not moving properly. My left arm separates from my body and find it hard to rotate back of left hand towards target to square up the club face. I just don't think I ever release the club in the right way. Days when I make good contact could be a well timed flip. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Dan Shauger teaches a pendulum style release. Very powerful. Mike Austin style as you mentiuon. The hands move from bowed to cupped through the impact area. It is a long drive style action. I think that it is good to know. The pivot you will learn is very simlar to the pivot that I am advocating where the body acts somewhat like a bow in transition. Enjoy your lesson and get back to me about how it goes. It is not how I like to swing, but you can't argue with the power of that release.
@sevam1872

That sounds about right. Your main focus should be on how that right leg feels on the backswing and through transition. There are several ways to move into the left leg, but how you get to the left leg is the key to everything.

Great advice and observation with respect the back foot . I've done this for years realizing that it is a key element to Moe's move . Easy on the camera guy , it sounds like he is trying to build his game and keep Casey from getting drilled by a golf ball ! Many videos show Moe's back foot action and position , for me , the ball joint of the front hip is even more important ! If it is incorrect the transition forward is disrupted ruining the center point of balance . This may be a personal issue but it is an absolute necessity for me . You have a great swing that contains a lot of natural rhythm and timing so this may not even factor into your thought pattern .

Great vid. Went to the drivingrange and tried to "screw the right foot clockwise into the ground", and i hit some strokes like I never had before. Crisp and powerful. But a lot of my shots went to the right or had a slice in them. all though im not sure, I think I might have stood to far from the ball at adress and/or not enough pronounce in the backswing. Any thoughts on that? It could be something very different, i'm not sure

The center of balance is towards the back of the body at the top of the spine. From the front that is straight through the top of the sternum. That is what you turn around in the golf swing. Hogan never discussed this to my knowledge.
