I saw Kundun, more than once on TV. I think I'm lucky. I'm not a particular fan of Scorsese, but the film impressed me very much, despite of its rationalization, simplification and even stereotyping, it was not an easy movie to make.

We had the luck in Czech Republic, that it ran in the cinemas and as I remember it had good numbers, so we never knew the silent treatment it received overseas. It was the 90s here, we have got rid of the communists and Russian armies after 40 years and Dalai Lama and Tibet were very popular, also thanks to the president Václav Havel, His Holiness was visiting Czechia quite regularly. Kundun also ran in the Czech TV several times, so the whole country had opportunity to watch it several times :)

Totally unrelated to this: Disney also hasn't released New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, and they released multiple shows without their pilots (you had to buy the second season to get that). You can also buy a "Complete Set" without getting the complete series. Disney's outright deceptive in their marketing.

Could this be leverage that the strikers in Hollywood can use? Imagine if the Disney writers started yelling “Watch Kundun.” That would bring such bad press to Disney that they’d HAVE to capitulate. Probably wouldn’t solve the problem of China having our entertainment held captive. But is that a start???
