Fred Gwynne was amazing. He used to visit neighbors, in Pomona, CA, driving a VW bug car...seeing his large frame unfold out of that tiny car, was a feat of legerdemain! _Really_ nice guy! The show used numerous tricks to make him appear _much_ taller/larger than he already was...huge lifts under his boots, lots of torso padding under the clothes, and on the sets, "forced perspective" by having him stand on risers when others weren't, and angling the camera to look up at him; sometimes Lilly bent her knees to appear shorter/more petite. They had fun doing that show; it was directly competing with Addams Family series. Both comedies, but Addams Family had darker overtones, a bit more adult. Munsters was definitely geared to kids...make it about "monsters", but not very scary.
