Kind of a shame the Muppet revival has already died out after only two movies and one season of the new show. If it had taken off, Disney might have been motivated to revive this idea.

It's awkwardly situated now, since the entrance to it is going to be sandwiched between the new Star Wars Land and the existing Star Wars-themed area around Star Tours and Trials of the Temple. It makes me wonder if Muppets Courtyard is long for this world, or if they're eventually going to rip it out and put in some transitional Star Wars stuff.

I think that's just a side effect of the amount of time it took to develop the concept. Rob made a pretty good case in an earlier video that, when the Avatar land was first being planned around 2010 or so, it would have seemed like a great idea. Disney needed a next-generation themed land as an answer to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Disney hadn't yet bought Star Wars, and interest in it was sort of in ebb after the prequels; they'd just bought Marvel but contractually couldn't do anything with it in Florida. And Avatar had just been a giant hit, making world-record box office. It seems to be drawing them in, anyway--few people really care about Avatar but the spectacle alone is a draw.

One thing for sure, now that the Great Movie Ride is now gone. I hope these Knee will go back and do the Muppet parody of The Great Movie Ride, and finally make the great Muppet Movie Ride. Because if a beloved and centerpiece attraction it's now gone, and it will be replaced by Mickey and Minnie's runaway Railway. Disney needs to make a tribute attraction, but why not do it with the Muppets. I hope Disney will really go back and finally make the great Muppet Movie Ride, so that everybody can experience a tribute to the original, and at the same time to see a parody of it. And more of a wacky way controlled and managed by the Muppets. I really hope that Disney will finally build the great Muppet Movie Ride, right next to Muppet Vision 3D. Because I rather experience two attractions of The Muppets and go to a small area theme to The Muppets.

FR was Jim's first international production that had its specific own wrap-around Doc/Sprocket segments whilst all other Fraggle/Doozer/Gorg segments were dubbed from the American HBO/Canadian CBC original. It's not like the foreign versions of Sesame Street where, country-specific characters aside, all show clips are dubbed.

@Dillon Ohlemiller Eisner is the one who wanted the Muppets. It was one of the last things he did before leaving Disney. Iger doesn't really care for them because he can't seem to turn them into a multi-billion dollar property like Marvel and Star Wars. Iger is looking for big gains. The biggest hit the Muppets have had since Disney bought them was the 2011 movie, which was basically forced into production by Jason Segel. It still only made 165 million world wide, which sounds great, but compared to Disney's other properties it's nothing. The second movie Disney did failed, making less than half of what the previous movie made (though I think it was actually better). Disney tried one more time with a TV show which failed. Part of the issue with The Muppets (TV) was that they tried to reinvent the characters too much. Gonzo wasn't a weird dare devil, he was a writer with no respect for Kermit. Scooter wasn't a scheming suck up to Kermit, he was a wimpy mama's boy. Piggy got turned into an actual big star with ego to match instead of a wanna be with an undue ego. Kermit, worst of all, because a cowardly passive aggressive shell of his former self. All in all I liked the show for what it was, but it wasn't what I wanted it to be. When they finally started fixing the bugs it was too late and they were canceled. It just got worse for the Muppets since then. They fired Kermit's performer because he was "difficult" to work with. Kermit was replaced and all of the fans that came about after Jim Henson's death experienced their own "wrong sounding Muppets" that older fans had gone through. Personally, I like the new performer and think he will bring back the Kermit of old. Anyhoo... I do wish the Henson kids had gone through with the sale. I think there was fear that Disney would overwhelm them without Jim to steer the Muppets in the right direction. The projects Disney and The Jim Henson studio did together were really great though. Dinosaurs, Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets Tonight, all of these were great with Brian Henson at the helm. With Disney's money and Brian Henson directing I think we would have seen a much better outcome for The Muppets instead of the limbo they fell into in the late 1990's.

@MuppetCore

Fiama98 I have to agree with you. People forget that a German company called EMTV bought Henson in 2000. A year later, after a near collapse, they put Henson up for sale, a process that dragged on for two years. Eisner was increasingly under fire at this time, but they did just buy Fox Family, and the Muppets were celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Muppet Show. And Brian seemed more engaged with his name on everything, including Bear and Farscape, which were just wrapping up. Between 2001 and 2003, numerous press reports talked of Disney’s continued interest in Henson and the Muppets. The Hensons bought back their company in ‘03, when EMTV was on the verge of selling Henson to Classic Media (now part of DreamWorks) and Sesame Workshop. The Hensons had wanted Disney (or some big company) to buy Henson, not a small rights holder like Classic, so they stepped in at the last minute. A year later, they sold the Muppets and Bear to Disney, while keeping everything else. I do wonder why that was the final result, and what led to the Muppets and the rest of Henson being split up like that. I also wonder what could have happened if Disney had bought Henson back in 2000 instead of EMTV, or if they had bought them from EMTV between 2001 and 2003 when everyone assumed they would, or if they had bought the entire company and collection of Henson characters in 2004. Could more meaningful Muppet stuff been made if Brian was directly involved? Could possibly the non-Muppet parts of Henson (Fraggles, Labyrinth, Farscape, whatever) have a presence at the parks or at the studio and networks? What would the combined Muppet/Jim Henson entity backed by the Disney machine have pumped out by now? I guess we’ll never know. I guess it doesn’t matter, it’s been 15 years and everyone’s doing their thing. But Disney’s bought more stuff, launching Disney+, and MV3D will literally be in the shadow of Star Wars Land. Could Henson, settled in at Disney, have gotten lost in all this, or benefit as much as anyone cranking out IP for a company that needs it? I’d love to know.

Hey Rob, I've heard much speculation that the old shelved Disney roller coaster Fire Mountain may go into adventureland as a Moana roller coaster. Do you think this rumor may come true and do you think it would be a good idea on Disney's part and for those who will attend Disney World for their 50th anniversary?
@MidwaytoMainStreet
7 жыл бұрын
Great question! I've heard the rumor as well, though I also heard that the idea would still very much be a big if since there might be parallels drawn to Universal's Volcano Bay (even though they seem so different). I'm personally a fan of the idea. I think Moana is a perfect fit for Adventureland and if the other rumors of Tomorrowland rides coming for the 50th are true then it would be a great way to balance things out. That said I'd hope they'd also consider other thrill ride concepts beyond just a coaster. I love coasters, but I want to see some innovation from them!

I see a lot of people putting a lot of blame on the Henson kids, but they've actually always been a major part of keeping Jim's legacy alive over the years. I think it's understandable for them to be wary to sell their father's most beloved characters to a big company without Jim being there to create things himself. They had other things to deal with at the time, and selling the characters right after their father's passing probably wasn't at the top of their list. And while this is only speculation, I've always been under the impression that Jim was planning to sell the Muppets more because he felt that he wouldn't be able to compete with Disney, so...if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
