There is an additional amount of shame and betrayal when you learn that friends, family, and social acquaintances knew of your husbands indiscretions and never bothered to warn you or correct him. It is extremely painful. I can certainly imagine a spouse wanting to kill over it and I’m sure many have. In my much younger days I sat at my kitchen table with a knife in hand waiting for my wayward husband to return home. It was a timely call from my best friend who lives many miles away that saved me. Her kindness and guidance redirected me to my very young children, toward forgiveness and away from revenge. I am forever grateful to her and to the Spirit that directed her call. Be kind to others in your life. You never know but you may be saving your own life.

I have been down the roads mentioned here dozens of times and had no idea that DeRussey's Lane, now known as Franklin Boulevard, was the site of sensational murders nor that it was a lovers' lane at one time. Of course, it is not rural now as the pictures from the 1920's here show and in fact the buildings on the corners are relatively new. The Hall house on Nichol Ave, now surrounded by Rutgers's Douglas campus, eventually came into the possession of the University and became a dean's house. I get the feeling that Mrs. Hall probably would have let the reverend continue as a habitual philanderer but the family could not tolerate the further embarrassment of his abandonment of the lady.

Everything looked so rural back in 1922 and today it’s so urban. No farms in Somerset/New Brunswick now except for Cook College. I’ve been up and down Franklin Boulevard many times and never knew it was originally a lover’s lane called De Russy’s Lane. I thought that maybe Landing Lane was De Russy’s Lane.

ABSOLUTELY.. the brothers had to protect their sisters and the family's reputation . The PREACHERS wife would be "LABELED" back then , even if she was innocent in all of this . Which I doubt . Storytelling is an art~smooth as glass. I had to remind myself to take a breath. So those individuals that were held in low regard, by our society prevailed in the end. The 'crazy' lady, earning an honest living, was the most honest in this group of characters, and the slow and steady husband outlived them all The only ups side is this lousy bunch lost a ton of their money in this process of defending their worthless selves

The sickening repositioning - "posing" of the bodies reveals more than an act of passion. They worked together to lift Mrs. Mill's body and place the Reverend's arm behind her. Also, their placing of her hand on his leg. This was a vicious vengeance, and it's possible that Mrs. Hall placed the hat on her husband's head - or one of her brothers did, in order to make a mockery of his status. The almost playful afterthought of placing the Reverend's calling card against his foot, was not something that would have been done in a hurry. I imagine the three of them, under the moon, standing above the bodies and discussing the arrangement with calm, conspiratorial amusement. And then, "There!" the tossing of the torn love letters upon the lover's corpses.

It is certain that she did not love him, it’s also certain that he did not love her. The only love we can see here is coming from Mr. Mills praying for his wife by her grave. Poor man. This murder doesn't get all the attention it deserves - it's fascinating! I read Kunstler's book years ago and purchased another copy when he updated it, still convinced of his own conclusions. And I remember reading an opinion piece years after all were acquitted: Who did kill the reverend and the choir singer if it wasn't a family affair?

He also brought up the point that there was a very large KKK rally shortly after the murders in Franklin Twp. Mark- Your work never ceases to amaze me. Rich with details, photos & your artwork. Always so satisfying. Thank you so much. Couple of thoughts. The treatment of the farm lady was despicable. But the part that I can't get past is that the preacher told the maid of his plans. Maybe she overheard something. But does it seem likely that the master of a rich household would have disclosed his plans to the help? Thank you for all you do & share with us. I await the next one with excitement. Stay safe.
@TheyGotAwayWithMurder

Thank you, Lori - there are a couple of possibilities as to why the Rev Hall might have told the maid of his plans, but my suspicion is that the maid had deliberately attempted to win the Reverend's confidence... It is known that Mrs Hall had employed a network of spies to keep her informed of her husband/Mrs Mills' movements - Ralph Gosline admitted to being paid to inform on the couple. The Hall/Stevens clan seemed to rely on their money to purchase/suppress information both before and after the murders. This makes it likely, in my view, that the maid would have been a source of information herself, and would have been briefed to engage the husband's confidence.

I had heard about this murder long ago but only knew bits of it.This was so well researched,complete with many pics,great narritive! Rev Hall & Mrs Mills were dolts if they thot they were going to get away with shoving this affair in the face of a wealthy woman in a small town !! If you're going to be such an obvious social climber as Hall ,you have to play by the rules. Embarrassing his wife in front of whole town like a moron and Mills making that toast sealed the deal for them! Eleanor just decided to take out the trash. Gee...I wonder why the police refused to hear out Jane calling 7 times ,being an eye witness when they darn near tortured that kid that found the bodies into giving police a name and putting an innocent man in prison! The justice system wouldn't do that now,would they?😱🙄 I don't think it's a mystery who killed them or why.
@shicruisin7004

Why the police........? Because the reverend's wife was the richest woman in town! They more than likely got paid/bribed to get them off scott-free. As my Mom used to say, money talks. The rich do tend to get found innocent of crimes, today and in the past, and probably will continue to get off in future too.

What a sordid case! I totally believe that it was the Hall/Stevens clan and getting away with this horrendous act is absolutely sickening. The poor pig woman! Even on her deathbed no-one believed her. Seems the corruption was rife and widespread with bribes being distributed freely like alms to the poor. And the tongue/larynx removal - what a barbarous act of hatred and vengeance. Incredible story, beautifully told and I loved the sketches, they make all the difference in bringing the drama to life. Thanks yet again for all your hard work, brilliant! :)
