Awesome! What's really funny is, here the producers would add the Dolby but not remove it in the studio, and then we'd all buy the cassette of the album *with Dolby on the whole track* and play in at home with the Dolby switched off as well! 😂 No wonder my ears are ringing all the time at 6k.

Always loved the Dolby trick! Sometimes on insert, sometimes as a send, enabling different amounts for different channels, and then blended in, in parallel. You can approximate it, or perhaps get even more crazy or subtle with it, by using a send to a multiband compressor set to expansion, muting all bands except 2, one high-passed at approx 3KHz, the other high-passed at approx 9KHz, so both work only on the high end, and there is a generous overlap from 9KHz onward (double processed). Those were more or less the frequency crossover points of the upper bands of the original Dolby units, IIRC. I like & advise to put a pretty strong de-esser before it, better if it's one acting on sibilance by phase inversion and not by compression, like e.g. the SPL does or the old Valley People did, as it makes the result more usable and less troublesome even in heavy doses.

As of today - June 15, 2023 - AudioThing who makes Type A has it on sale for $29! And after you purchase it they offer Type B for $19! its a great deal! I had forgotten about this trick until I saw your video - back in 2004 I was fortunate to cut my first album with David Prater (Dream Theater) producing it and for our single Tell Me he scoured eBay for an old Dolby Type A hardware unit, and the used it on the layers of background vox on that song - was super cool to see that in action, and was really impressed with it. Great video and so glad you talked about this trick!

dbx Type I/II noise reduction basically used 2:1 compression followed 75uS pre-emphasis for encoding and 75uS de-emphasis followed by 2:1 expansion for decoding. Compression followed by expansion gives you companding noise reduction. 75uS pre-emphasis could be considered to be an HF shelving filter with 10dB or so of boost starting somewhere around 1kHz. 75uS pre/de-emphasis is ubiquitous in the broadcast industry and Googling it will provide you with plenty of references.

I'm no engineer. But yeah, Dolby in the raw is pre-emphasis on the HF in encoding (to tape) and attempting to remove the emphasis (expansion is piss poor un-compression) on playback. The idea is that you crank the highs going in, and when you reduce them on playback, you subdue tape-hiss while re-establishing your HF balance. As a kid, I NEVER used the dolby button when playing my cassettes. The sound was so much brighter and alive. (remember the loudness button?) DBX NR on my tascam Porta was similar. As to why dolby emulation (without the decode) sounds better than dicking around with a multiband comp... probably similar as to why we love the sound of phono EQ. Years of experimentation went into that stuff to create a pleasing result. It's haughty to think you're gonna re-create that pleasure in 5 minutes on a broad tool.

Switched to the 13pin pby-a connector with a 3db shelf at 14.673k through the Ronson multiband parametric unilateral mid/side compression expander and got basically the same thing.

This plug in example is really amazing. Is what a time Savor as well. Back in the day you would have to run the vocals through the processor and adjust the processor so that the main signal was not coming out. You would have to capture the sound of the noise that was being taken away from the signal if that makes any sense. What you're hearing is what the unit considers to be noise. You could basically listen to the noise that the unit wanted to remove and record that signal. Once it was recorded you could EQ compress and mix it into the song. Because of the signal chain in the analog days there was a tiny bit of delay on this as well. If you add just a slight bit of predelay this sounds even more amazing. Thanks for the tip I will now retire my old noise reduction units and get this plugin. I had not thought to look for one.
@JDLViewer

Dolby type A or B encode just did a dynamic band limited encode pre-tape and brought those same bands back down, dynamically, post tape. It is not noise only. The purpose was to reduce tape induced noise by keeping desired signal levels higher overall going to the tape. It is a level adjusted-encoded signal to tape and a level adjusted-decoded signal from tape. Dynamic eq in a sense.

Thanks for clarifying how the Dolby A trick works. I had thought it was done through compression (which Dolby noise reduction does use compression) ...but I wasn't sure how the pitch would shifts using compression...so I thought I was probably missing something. From your advice on Buss mixing...I've been modeling Busses in my mixing ideas as...Parallel Busses (for Parallel Compression, Phasing, Flanging, Delays, & Reverbs)....Layered Busses (for Drum Top & Bottom or Depeche Mode layered keyboard sounds to make 2 keyboard sounds into 1 or Layered Background vocals, etc)...Stereo Busses (for a pair of Rhythm Guitar parts or Piano treble & bass parts or Drum parts or multi Background Vocal parts, etc)...& Stem Busses (for sync licensing versatility). So maybe I will continue to model Buss ideas in my head...but I think I will probably be doing, late, more finalized, mixing through the Busses. It seems like good advice from you. So thanks again.

in some ways it sounds like if you'll using dbx encoding of the recorded signal but then on playback you didn't decode the signal you just allowed the encoded signal to play through, you would get that compressed High frequency signal like the one demonstrated on this plugin.
