The Mysterious Mayan Civilization
The Discovery of the Mayan Civilization
On the night of October 11 to 12, 1492, after a grueling 70-day voyage across a seemingly endless sea, Christopher Columbus and his crew, almost discouraged, finally sighted dry land.
At dawn, the three ships of the flotilla dropped anchor in a calm and deserted bay, in the name of the crown of Castile.
A notary recorded the taking of possession of this islet, probably the current Watling islet in the Bahamas archipelago, but named San Salvador by the famous navigator.
Subsequently, they discovered the island of Haiti, called Hispaniola, which was once confused with the end of Asia! Cuba and Jamaica, approached shortly after, could only be in the eyes of their discoverers Cipangu and Cathay, that is to say Japan and China!
It was not until 1513, when Ponce de Leon arrived in Florida, that the American continent itself was unknowingly approached.
However, the main subject of our documentary is not the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, but the Mayan civilization.
The Mayans are an indigenous people of Central America who developed an advanced civilization from ancient times to the early modern era. They are known for their ancient temples, glyphs, and complex and precise calendar system.
The Mayan civilization has spanned the ages and is still very much alive today. There are currently around 7 million. The majority in Guatemala, the Mayans represent part of the population of Mexico and Belize, and to a lesser extent, Honduras and El Salvador. They are custodians of their culture and actively work to rediscover their own past while looking toward the future.
Maya culture is characterized by monumental architecture, iconography and hieroglyphic writing, as well as complex mathematical and astronomical systems.
Despite local differences and more than thirty living languages, the Maya share common cultural roots and the common heritage of an accomplished civilization that reached its peak between 250 and 1200 CE.
