DENJIRO: Today, I’ll show you an interesting phenomenon using this rubber balloon. I’m going to use a thermographic camera, which detects temperature differences, to see what happens when I stretch and shrink the balloon before it is inflated. Here I go.
The balloon is red. This means the temperature has gone up. I’m going to wait until the balloon becomes room temperature, then let it shrink. It’s blue now. That means the temperature went down.
BOY: How strange!
DENJIRO: Why does the temperature go up when I stretch it and go down when I let it shrink? Let me explain. When I stretch the rubber at once, the molecules that make up the rubber start moving vigorously, and the temperature rises. When I keep it stretched out, the heat escapes, and the movement of the molecules calms down and returns to the state it was in before the rubber was stretched. When I let it shrink at once, the movement of the molecules calms down even more, and the temperature drops. This is named after the people who discovered it and is called the Gough-Joule effect.
Now, let me show you another mysterious property of rubber. I have some weight suspended by rubber, and the rubber is stretched out. What do you think will happen if we pour hot water on the rubber?
BOY: Will it become soft and stretch even more?
DENJIRO: Let’s see what will happen. He’s going to pour hot water on the rubber.
BOY: The rubber shrank!
DENJIRO: If we stop pouring hot water on it… The weight starts coming down. The rubber returns to its original stretched state. When you pour hot water on rubber that is stretched out, the shrinking force increases, and the weight us lifted up. When the rubber cools down, the shrinking force decreases, and the rubber returns to its original stretched state.
I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!"
