actually, the canon states that the one bug always escaping and being squashed (by sandy claws in the movie and sequal game and by donald in the kingdom hearts games) is the core of oogie boogie. if that bug dosent get squashed, he can rebuild himself. in the original jack vs oogie fight (which like the verse of snake and spider stew was cut because they couldnt get the bugs right) oogie sent out all his bugs save his core to kill jack. after the swarm is defeated he claims he saved his best trick for last, and his core bug flies away, only to be squished by santa. but maybe the sack does play a role. it is most likely a vital part of him, as when his sack gets damaged enough his bugs start pouring out, as he screams a variant of "My Bugs." But if the core escapes he can rebuild himself. luckily the core invariably gets squashed by a supporting character.

The idea that Oogie is a sack is intriguing. It could be that Oogie works based on whatever people fear. Bugs, snakes, spiders, slimy things. These are all things people fear or make people retch in disgust. Its rather telling that Oogie thread came loose during a battle with one of the few beings that does not fear him. and that it was Jack that started that unraveling process. When confront by someone who does not fear him, his powers are diminished and he falls apart. The sack peels away, revealing what he is. Not so much bugs and snakes...but rather an amalgamation of every little fear, and fright. These things are frightening when all lumped together but...when exposed and brought to light they fall apart. I am the shadow on the moon at night. Filling your dreams to the brim with fright. A shadow is a formless entity and is generally exponentially more terrifying than what casts it. Always larger, always misshapen, always moving. This brings me to my thought. Oogie is not the bugs, nor the sack. He is simply..or rather a being that is empowered by fear. The sack is his means of gathering all the little fears and frights into himself, which then become his body. Any sack would probably serve his purpose.
@imjango1052

So . . . He’s the postmortem manifestation of Jonathan Crane, aka The Scarecrow from Batman. Yeah, that works for me. Actually I really like your theory. Oogie’s power derives from the collective fear of him. The reason he himself is afraid of Jack is because Jack isn’t afraid of him, thus he has no power over him. Actually, that again ties back to Scarecrow because he is incapable of feeling fear unless he is being pursued by Batman. I’m not really trying to link them, but it is a nifty correlation.

Boogie Man traditionally has no solid form it’s just the embodiment of fear in a general sense. If something is creeping around a spooking you out, it’s the Boogie Man. Side Tangent: Oogie is the combination of every version of him. Sack Man, Bag Man, Bug Man, Boogie Man and Bug in particular used to mean Evil. So Bug Man could be understood as Evil Man

In Guatemala we have a Boogeyman called El Sombreron- "The Big Hat man". He's a small ogre-like man with a giant sombrero that rides a demon horse in the dead of night. He serenades beautiful girls with large brown eyes and long hair, and makes them fall in love him with him. He sings and loves to braid their hair (including the hair of his demon horse, which I find really funny). Then, when the girls are completely smitten with him, he leaves, and is never seen again. The girl is devastated and heartbroken, so much so that she doesn't eat or drink and starves to death. I believe the moral of the story is warning young women to be careful of men who speak pretty words and seduce you; they will break your heart and leave you

Although I like your theory I personally think that Oogie is actually a bug hive-mind as, in the move, after the sack is removed Oogie is still able to move for a short period of time and is still able to speak when down to his last bug, indicating that he still has control over 'his bugs' (his fellow bugs maybe?) even when most of them fall to their demise into his own pit of goop. If we also take the games into account (though wither they are cannon is still up for debate as far as I remember) Oogie being a hive-mind would also explain how he returns in 'Oogie's Revenge' as only one bug would have had to survive for him to get away and have Lock Shock and Barrel collect more bugs for him so that he could come back later. In Oogie's Revenge he also has the ability to show himself as a shadow whilst being miles away which could help explain how Oogie gets his new bugs...It might be a stretch but maybe he has hidden dark magic that he uses to mind control new bugs to join him. This would also reference that some bogeyman depictions are shown as animated shadows. In turn I think the sack is just to help with physical movement allowing Oogie to be both malleable and to prevent him from being a lump of bugs with no way to escape from danger. Feel free to criticize if you have evidence otherwise! I'll look forward to seeing your thoughts.

I definitely like this idea better than the whole holiday leader thing. My version of Oogie's origin is that Finklestein created him and let him explore as he pleased. He wanted to contribute to the Halloween celebrations as best he could so he set off on his own to devise the most effective method of scaring. His "perfect" method showed to be overly violent and dangerous when he presented his findings to the rest of the town, however, and Jack Skellington confronted him about this only to find that Oogie could not be convinced that his way wasn't the best. Jack and the others alienated him after that, which not only explains why he's isolated from the rest of Halloween Town but why Finklestein is so overprotective of Sally. He doesn't want another one of his creations to turn out like that.

When I was a baby theorist, I came up with a theory that Oogie Boogie was the spirit of Dr Facilier (sorry for bad spelling) from the Princess and the Frog. It made sense back then, since most of the monsters in Halloween town are presumably dead, and Dr. Facilier died. He was sucked through a weird portal through a gravestone, and Jack was able to transport to Halloween town through a statue in a graveyard. They both are extremely scary and have a similar aesthetic. They also both have a chance related form of power, with Dr Facilier being a fortune teller and Oogie being a gambler. Now to me it’s sort of a joke, but still… I’m so bad explaining things but I hope you get the point.

Why
@GanonGhidorah

I think that Oogie is actually a manifestation of things that scare people - sure the Bugs are prominent, but he also is comprised of snakes and bats as well. So really the idea behind Oogie is that he can cause such fear - enough to present himself as a large and intimidating figure. But he's actually incredibly cowardly and weak-willed; the moment Jack shows up, he knows he's in-trouble - he's more comfortable taking on restrained people who are clearly at a disadvantage, instead of someone equal in a straight-fight. The idea with Oogie is to deconstruct him - once you pull that one-thread, you realize that Oogie is only made of small things that aren't really scary - thus he loses his power, as the whole thing falls apart. Sure, Oogie is said to be depicted as the tiny green brain-bug that acts as the core of his being - the one that gets squashed by Santa in the movie and Donald in KH II; but I doubt that means Oogie is dead for good. First-off; most everyone in Halloween Town is dead - they're undead, and thus immortal. Secondly; you ever try to crush a really stubborn cockroach that just won't seem to die? I feel like that's Oogie's core-bug. Sure, you can step on him; but he'll bide his time, waiting for people to get scared again - and he'll gradually build himself back-up, until he's ready to roll-the-dice again.

In Brazil we don't have a traditional boogeyman. Our boogeyman is an old man who carries a garbage sack around, if he sees a kid during sunset or the night he kidnaps them. He tricks the kid by saying that there is a treasure inside the bag, when the kid looks inside he traps them and no matter how much you scream or kick no one will be able to hear you. Then he sells your organs in the black market, puts the money and gold inside the sack and uses to trick the next kid into looking inside.

Personally I think Oogie Boogie is just a spirit. It would explain why he's the shadow of the moon at night, but also how is able to project his Consciousness into so many bugs and things within his body. Also, once all the bugs leave his body and it's only left as a single insect it will try to flee until he's able to gather more again under his influence.

Sackmen and their behavior are very reminiscent of the Krampus, especially with Oogie Boogie already being seen as another Anti-Santa. It would be pretty interesting to consider Oogie Boogie's burlap body being a well used or disregarded bag of the Krampus. Everyone in Halloween Town gets filled in about "Sandy Claws" from Jack, but Ooogie Boogy (or at least the trio) seems to have some prior knowledge of Santa and even refers to him properly.

I used to be absolutely obsessed with all things TNBC, so one small thing I’d like to add, in the game Oogie’s Revenge one of the characters (I believe Mr. Hyde) tells Jack that Lock, Shock and Barrel “sewed Oogie back together”. So I presume they got their hands on the sack again. What they stuffed him with I have no idea though

My theory is that the bugs contain one fragment of Oogie’s soul each and that since the bugs slow die, Oogie needs to keep adding more to himself to stay alive. When he turns on final battle mode, he and his soul are still inside to be crushed as the rest of him empties from multiple hits to his stomach. But that’s only a theory.

Just something I noticed. The bug that was dipped in the poison literally had it's exoskeleton melted off. A fan theory that pointed out how everyone in halloween town died to get there in some way shape or form, with the boogie man having been skinned. Not sure if there's a connection there but still.
