How does the Tlaxcala Nahuatl differ.. My mother's family's from there & even though she wasn't a N8V speaker, they would use Nahuatl words for certain things & animals..
@thenahuatlchannel3896
3 жыл бұрын
It's basically more of a Central Variety, but with a little bit of an eastern influence. The pronunciation is pretty much the same, Tlaxcala doesn't have -ya endings like huasteca does (Yalwa vs. Yalwaya for example). Also the past tense will be different. But I've seen Tlaxcala and Huasteca natives have a conversation. Tlaxcala is more respectful in terms of the grammar. www.historicas.unam.mx/publicaciones/revistas/nahuatl/pdf/ecn07/096.pdf

1. Is good 2. Ximoyollalili comes from yoltlalia, which sounds like yollalia. Then you add an applicative lia, to make yollalilia "to console s.t. for someone. In this case the person object is "yourself" and the physical object is "motlasohikniwtsin" So something like: console your friend, for yourself,

Whats the implication of coyotl, is it negative, neutral? Do any inanimate/plant words get mandatory plural ending? Could some words such as altepetl be a former diphrase to describe something, like "in atl, in tepetl", "the water, the hill" = a sizable settlement?
@thenahuatlchannel3896
2 жыл бұрын
Coyotl as a term for non natives is kind of negative, as coyotes steal from natives just like europeans do. No plant words get mandatory plural, but i have heard xochimeh used a few times, but not mandatory. Sometimes the plural is used if you are talking about various types of flowers for example. Yep, Altepetl is a former diphrase! Im not sure how many others are hidden out there but that is something to look out for.

Is there a reason why with miston, while having an 'n', we add meh to it for mistonmeh while with michin, we drop the 'n' for michimeh? Thank you very much
@thenahuatlchannel3896
Жыл бұрын
Good noticing Miston comes from mistli + ton, so the n is part of the ton and its fused into the word While in michin, its made of michi-n so the n can be dropped , its not fused onto the word permanently
I'm confused. In the picture of the two birds, should the plural of tototl have been used? Or were we just referring to one bird. Also, using "Inin" for singular I can understand, but if we switched to plural would it stay the same?

Koyotl is the word for Coyote.. I know people whose name is Koyotl and nothing negative is implied with that name or animal. Even the Koyotl as a guide or nagual isn't negative. The coyote is one of the oldest living mammals and is often referenced when speaking about how our ancestors should structure their society. Clearly it's being forgotten if we would use that word as a insult.
@thenahuatlchannel3896

1. Since the Spanish arrived , some were called coyotl. That was 500 years ago. 2. In nahuatl culture, you can be called a silly name like cuitlatl and quenhueltehiantin and its not considered negative as a name. Like nezahualcoyotl. 3. Coyotl the animal is seen as kind of negative, also in Mixtec culture. They are like foxes in european culture, sly tricksters who kill dogs and your small livestock.
@Koyokochotl
2 жыл бұрын
@@thenahuatlchannel3896 Wasn't always that way and if you believe a negative narrative about your own people, then you're helping with the perpetuation of it. We didn't have " live stock ". That's a European thing. Your implication is purely negative and an insult. You refer to people as " Koyotl " for serval reasons that imply negativity and prejudice. They are no longer a " person " they are an " animal ". Just like the Spanish, French and Anglos said about us. Funny how you spin it back like it's valid. We never had this infatuation with dehumanizing someone. We always recognized the humanity of our people and the humanity of the Spaniards when they arrived. Did they see ours? No. Do they now? No. We also respected the land and it's people, in all forms. The " Coyote " seen as a trickster is like " the devil ". Which, isn't Native either. The Coyote is tricking you? Funny how people use their hound dogs to hunt them and you expect them to treat your pet with respect. Just because the " Mixtec " say it, doesn't make it okay. When a racist calls an African the " N " word, it isn't said like " oh hey don't worry, it's just who you are " it is applied with hatred and something vile. When you say " Koyotl "? You're putting someone down. Plain and simple.

@@Koyokochotl you seem like you have an Axe to grind here. Yan is not making any comments or declarations on the sociopolitical history of the word "koyotl" but is rather presenting it in a linguistic context. Furthermore, you seem to be victim to the "Nobel savage" trope perpetuated in the 20th century that Pre-Columbian Americans lived in some kind of nature fueled paradise. A garden of Eden, so to speak; the reality is much different. I love, and I do mean love, to study the Triple alliance, but that doesn't mean I am incapable of finding fault in their society. They were highly advanced, and much like the rest of mankind, they had their negative aspects too. Things lile theft, murder, rape, and a slew of other ailments affected The Alliance's society as much as it does any other highly advanced civilization. Lastly, why do you think Hernan Cortes was able to march on the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan with approximately 200,000 indigenous warriors? Because these people wanted to throw off the yoke of Mexica rule and all of the tribute payments and violent suppressions of rebellious movements that came with it. Had this been some kind of paradise without the evils brought by the Spanish (sarcasm) then there is no way Cortes could have recruited 200,000 (most likely more) indigenous warriors to raze the Mexica "Venice of the New World" (as the Spaniards called it).
@Koyokochotl
2 жыл бұрын
@@nicholaslaport3354 The " noble savage ", Interesting. I'm merely pointing out the European influence in the Nahuatl language. Nobody claimed benevolence here, every native tribe across Cemanahuac has made mistakes in one way or another and this amassing of " 200,000 " warriors to invade Tenochtitlan wasn't anything to speak about so loosely. It wasn't battles that took down the triple alliance either, it was disease. Every tribe suffered because of that idiotic mistake. The over demonizing of central indigenous culture has painted many peoples as " warmongering" and " obsessed with sacrifice " which wasn't the case. Everything I said was factual, not noble. We never referred to other people as animals and although there was conflict there was also resolution. There's plenty of ugly in the Indigenous community to deal with like the colorism and racism adopted from the Europeans. Addressing the ugly is something we all need to face. Also, this place was paradise before child raping fascists arrived here.

This is the second time, I’ve listened to You. I heard lesson #1. I am asking, because, l learned how to say, Cualli Tonalli, Cuacualti, which I read, mean, Good Morning, Beautiful. Now, is there a great difference, between that and the Nahuatl, You speak. One last thing,if by learning the,Nahuatl, You speak, will I be able to understand and communicate with the Nahuatl speaking People in the surrounding areas of, México City ? Now, in Your honest opinion, which is the best form of, Nahuatl, and are all, Nahuatl, speaking People able to communicate with one another ? Last, but not least, I , also, read that Huasteco or Huasteca was a, Mayan, dialect ?

You will have a hard time finding native speakers left anywhere near mexico cith since large cities put pressure to assimilate, but yeah its mostly the same language but some minor grammatical changes you can study about. You can always study both. Huasteco the language is a type of mayan, correct. I think all varities are great. They all have their own flavor. The central varieties are more related to Cuauhtemocs variety of mexico city, but they have a lot of Spanish borrowings even with grammar. To me the huasteca variety is more conservative in some ways, so in those ways its more similar to ancient nahuatl
