This song touches me on such a deep level that it actually reopens some old wounds. She and I loved hard, but we fought intensely. I wish it worked. I still miss her every single day. I love this song, especially this performance, but it's so poignant that it's a little painful to listen to.

I lost my father today. I hated him for not being able to show me he loved me. I wanted to make him love me. Even as an adult, i would bring him his super pretzels because maybe it would stir a fond memory he may of had where he watched tour of duty with his only son and let him stay up too late on fridays. I knew he loved me, in his own way, but i wanted affirmation. I wanted the feeling of throwing down my army ants in excitement and running in the grass to my daddy as he closed the grey ford taurus door and grab his suit jacket from the passenger seat and id jump into him and his enourmous outstretched hands and leap onto his shoes with all the little holes in them and feel the weight of the world that a ten year old has to bear be lifted. This song is for people who dont know how to say I love you to the people they want love from the most. My kind of people. I love you dad. I hope that was enough.

teefly6 I was in your shoes 2 years ago. We were not that close when I was growing up because he was always busy working but there was a quiet bond that became stronger in the last few years of his life. I still miss him a lot and I although I'm not religious, I take comfort in that fact that if he were still around (somewhere, looking down) he would be proud of his only son. That scene with Tommy and his dad in the hotel room really resonated with me because without words, there's still so much we can say to each other. Thank you for sharing your memory and I hope you keep doing good!

This damn song. It captures one of the most heart-wrenching moments in a human's life. The loss of someone so dear and it can apply to many scenarios. This is that feeling, this song is that feeling, the one no one ever wants to feel because the pain is so excruciating.

I had just moved to Europe when I discovered this song (band) glued in cd form to the front of an UnCut magazine. It absolutely crushed me then as I had painfully ended a long relationship before moving to Europe, but the genius simplicity and haunting beauty of the song burned into my soul. Those first few months in Europe were dark. Now, nearly 20 years later, I find myself back in my home country after painfully ending a long relationship in Europe. I heard 'About Today' last night (in a movie soundtrack) for the first time in many years but all those long-lost feels came flooding back in. Us humans seem to be addicted to the tragedy of the human condition. There is beauty in paradox. God, I still miss those times/people.

The most powerful beautiful song, discovering there is nothing can be said or done to save a relationship the love and mutual respect is there, but it’s run it’s cycle and sometime you just have to go against all emotions and accept it’s over and there is no way to save what has died. It is so beautiful yet so sad. We all been there at some point or will get there at some point.

This song reminds me of my father. I listened to this song on repeat after his cancer diagnosis, it sums up our relationship over the years, not really close as a father and son but close in ways but we couldn't communicate it through a relationship. While he was dieing thus songs sums up the moments I lost to ask him '' about today'' RIP dad. Amazing song, I love the national

This song reminds me of my friend Solly. He died back in 2016. He suffered from Bipolar disorder and struggled with depression, he talked to me a lot about what he was going through, and I didn't know what was wrong but I knew there was something that was beyond what I could help with so I pushed him to get help. When he was diagnosed with Bipolar he was placed on an eight week waiting list to receive help, and I thought to myself "well now the mental health services know he needs help, I don't need to do anything now". In that time he hanged himself. I held myself responsible, I felt that I had let him down, that my negligence had caused his death. I thought that because I had stopped reaching out it was my fault that his step dad found him hanging, that if I'd done more he wouldn't have been trying to give Solly CPR despite the fact that he'd gone cold and grey. I hated myself, I couldn't even look in the mirror. At around the same time my family became homeless and while I was safe doing a residential course at college my family were moving from place to place with nowhere to call their own. My self hatred coupled with the anxiety for my family meant I suffered from chronic insomnia, I'd go three or four days without sleep on average. I didn't know how to cope with it so I drank heavily so I could sleep. I became a drunk, just 17 years old and with a drink problem, and it made me hate myself even more. I hated myself so much that I put a plastic bag over my head and tried to kill myself. I didn't feel like I deserved to be happy. Then I realised that if I killed myself someone else might blame themselves for my death the same way I did for Solly's and I couldn't do that to them. So I tore the bag open and got drunk to hide the pain I felt. One day I woke up in an unfamiliar location with no memory of the last twelve hours and I realised that if I didn't stop I would become an alcoholic, so I cut back from being a drunk to a heavy drinker. It was fucking awful, from the sheer amount that I drank my brain had started to become dependant on drink, and starved of it I suffered from crippling migraines and vomiting. Then I got a job about a year later working in Dementia Care and it gave me the impetus to cut back even further from a heavy drinker to an occasional drinker. I always have a lot of time for alcoholics because I very nearly became one. I'm in a better place now. As a rule I don't drink when I'm upset, and I'm in the Royal Navy pursuing my lifelong dream of being a Medic. Mentally I'm tougher and much more resilient. I no longer hate myself. I know that while I did not do enough to help my friend, I am not responsible for his death. It's taken me a long time, but I'm healing

I remember this was the last song they played before arcade fire played their show and I’d gotten to the concert late because I didn’t know who the national was, and holy shit this was the first song I’d ever heard them do and I was so mesmerized by the song. Wrong. He is expressing his true emotions, emotions he has lived through years ago. Generally, any person that experienced something so tragic, or losing someone to death or out of love. To portray this, he literally got drunk on stage, started to have a smoke (you can see) and sang the lyrics with true emotions so each word had a full meaning behind them. Turning simple words into poetry within seconds.
