Novelist and academic, Saikat Majumdar’s exceptional works of fiction - The Scent of God, Silverfish and The Firebird, are celebrated for their vivid imagery, haunting contemplations and intimate portrayals of human life and longing. His novel, The Middle Finger, tells the story of a poet grappling with social boundaries and ethical and existential questions in sharp, lyrical prose. Tanuj Solanki, winner of the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar and known for Neon Noon and Diwali in Muzaffarnagar: Stories, returns with a provoking novel on the impact of technology on human emotion and modern workplaces - The Machine is Learning.In conversation with Anukriti Upadhyay, both writers discuss form, expression and invention in their chosen genre.
Saikat Majumdar is a Professor of English and Creative Writing at Ashoka University. His novels include The Middle Finger, The Scent of God, and The Firebird/PlayHouse. He has also published a co-edited collection of essays, The Critic as Amateur; non-fiction, College; and a book of criticism called Prose of the World.
Tanuj Solanki is the author of three books of fiction. His most recent novel, The Machine is Learning, was longlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature 2020. Tanuj's short fiction has been published in The Caravan, The Hindu Business Line, DNA, Out of Print, and several other publications. In 2019, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar for his short-story collection, Diwali in Muzaffarnagar.
Anukrti Upadhyay writes fiction and poetry in both English and Hindi. Her English works, twin novellas Daura and Bhaunri and novel Kintsugi have been published by the 4th Estate imprint of Harpercollins in India and have been nominated for multiple awards. Upadhyay has been awarded the Sushila Devi Award for the best work of fiction written by a woman author in 2020 for Kintsugi. Her Hindi works, a short story collection, Japani Sarai, and novel, Neena Aunty, have been published by Rajpal and Sons. Her writings have appeared in Scroll.in, Kitaab.sg, The Bombay Review, The Bangalore Review, The Bilingual Window and several Hindi publications.
