Six years before the Naval Training Center opened in San Diego, city fathers had offered the grounds of the Panama California Exposition to the US Government for use in conjunction with the World War 1 effort. The Navy, in particular took San Diego up on the offer. This great collection of photos of the Navy’s Balboa Park tenancy, during both wars, includes drilling on the Plaza de Panama, swimming in the Lily Pond and makeshift dormitories, hospitals, and mess tents. Many of these are rare images found nowhere other than the Rosemary Ann Phelan Photo Collection.
The Rosemary Ann Phelan Photo Collection is a remarkable compilation of nearly 9,000 images of San Diego and environs prior to 1950. James Phelan has spent over a decade collecting these wonderful photographs and curating this trove of topical slide shows. Ocean Beach Historical
Society is very proud to be able to host the Rosemary Ann Phelan Photo Collection.
