Basketball (especially NBA basketball) is a unique team sport in which the individual player can be propped up (and destroyed) on a pedestal. The media eats it up too. There are other team sports that exist outside of the US like indoor volleyball, and the media and the fans don't expose/discuss locker room drama as much.
