I only watch the playoffs intently. Regular season is watching halftime and Inside the NBA. The young players lack personality and grit. Domestically NBA is going to lose viewership. But that maybe offset in streaming more games in multiple countries.
@gf4670
2 ай бұрын
Well that's the thing; even though Amazon in theory has the biggest reach, their content is actually not nearly as viewed as one would think. And the NBA as a whole is kind of in a nadir and it's definitely hemorrhaging casual viewers and has been for years. And I don't know if they can offset that with the international market. League Pass didn't make as much money as one would think, and domestic leagues are kind of taking off. It's like what's going on with Hollywood with the Asian market souring on Hollywood movies, especially since the ability to make a high quality movie in your own language and culture is so readily available worldwide now. The globalization of the past few decades is unwinding now and sports is part of that.
@mjbset93
2 ай бұрын
@@gf4670 great breakdown. Constant growth is just unsustainable. The impact of 1992 Dream Team has come into its fullness. Domestic league in large western countries were eventually going to close the player pay gap with the NBA. You can still make more here in the NBA. But if you aren't going to be a star with a large sports brand marketing team (Nike, Fila, Adidas, Reebok, or etc) pushing your popularity the bump in salary might be worth the hassle of living internationally. I could even see a player like Luka winning 2 NBA Championships and going back to a European league in his early 30s. And we already had players like Stephon Marbury go overseas and be financially more successful there than what they were here.
@gf4670
2 ай бұрын
@@mjbset93 Yep. I mean the only reason this is happening now is because of the implosion/consolidation in streaming and really the whole scripted content market unraveling combined with the Hollywood strikes prompting the networks the move away from scripted and into reality and sports. Like Samson said, and we all know, NBC and probably Amazon are going to lose money on this deal, it's just that some content is better than none and it beefs up the stock price for now. Adam Silver lucked out in the timing because everyone overspent on scripted and streaming and now the chickens are being counted. And sports is headed in the same direction. It's all unsustainable.
