The PC-98 kind of appealed to me for its superior sound chip to the IBM PC speaker and Japanese style graphics (I really want to go to Japan). However, I still think that in the mid to late 1990s, the IBM PC was more powerful (having 3D graphics and Sound Blaster cards.)

You know, a lot of people don't want to talk about it, but those 'hentai games' ,or more specifically eroge visual novels, were what most of the founding companies, designers, and producers of the modern jrpg cut their teeth on. Why is this important? The focus on narrative rather than gameplay, using the compactness of the Japanese language thanks to kanji allowed more words to be stored in the same amount of memory, resulted in an ecosystem where it was easier to tell a story to a player rather than just entertain them with a game, sex sells and they were cheap to make. Although the stories would often be deplorable, in the end this resulted in not only the modern day visual novel ecosystem as that developed from it, but also resulted in a large group of Japanese devs working at the companies used to writing stories, and wanting to do something more ambitious. Using their own interpretations of table top games they created the games like the ones they played at the table, but flavored by attempts to tell stories. What this resulted in is the penitent for RPGs to focus on story and the characters, rather than player expression like western RPGs. That's right, if not for those 'hentai games' the JRPG would not have developed in the maner it did. Hurray for hentai!
@ler74
8 жыл бұрын
+ler74 Crap, I mentioned the part about storage in the same about of memory, but I forgot to mention screen space being the later issue Kanji use allowed them to overcome so they could tell stories. If you are interested, Extra Credits did an episode on partially on this subject in their 'western rpg vs jrpg' episodes, but I knew most of it beforehand. I've done a lot of research into the subject. >.>

+The Obsolete Geek Of course it's people still make games like that for the same reasons, I mean nothing is going to change the idea that sex sells, but at least quite a few studios these days use the visual novel, and even the eroge visual novel genres to at least do something worth while and artisically sound. The ecosystem just means that the guys that want to make the ambitious stories (I mean remember this is the logical extension of the choose your own adventure novel as an actual means of story telling) have to do something that, in hindsite, is actually rather deplorable to get thier parent companies to invest. Write pornography into their story to make it sell. The good ones still have great stories to tell, but a lot of them are forced to shoehorn in porn to sell it in an already small but dedicated market. Infact, if it goes on to sell well enough they will strip it of the pornographic content and sell an 'all ages' version on consoles these days (late 90's onward). It's a fantastic(ly under utilized) story presentation when done right, but it loses a lot of credit (and likelyhood of being released) in other markets by having this content at all, but it is growing a nicely sized niche market these days. Of course not all studios are limited to producing them with porn if they are trusted that they will sell enough by the studio that made them's name on the box (like stupid key, 5pb, and nitroplus). I mean they are (mostly) just books with pictures, but with an added layer of depth with choice, what's to dislike unless you just hate reading in general? If I somehow sparked your interest, reddit's visual novel sub put together this really nice recommendation chart sorted by genre/type (vertical) and "newbie friendliness" (horizontal) with plenty of detail for those who care. i.imgur.com/AtfhUOI.jpg

Yeah, absolutely. Remember that Hideo Kojima's biggest early hits (Snatcher, Policenauts) were PC-88/98 visual novels - although he somehow managed to get away without including anything too explicit, which probably helped the success of his games in the Western market. It's only recently that some of the more risque visual novels (such as Yu-No) have been remade without the "sex sells" content - hopefully this trend will continue so more early visual novels will get a wider audience, and their stories will finally get the recognition they deserve. To my knowledge, the only PC-98 visual novels that have been translated to English are Policenauts and Yu-No. I think that if the developers hadn't shoehorned in sexual content, which definitely prevented the genre from gaining traction in the West, many more visual novels would have received an English translation and Western release.

God I love the sound of the YM2608... The YM2203 is cool too. Sometimes, the limitations of a soundchip gives it charm and character, ya know? Really thinking about picking up a PC98... I even have a multisync CRT (NEC XM37 Plus), so I could plug it directly in it and enjoy a great CRT picture. But since I know pretty much nothing about computers, I'm afraid that I'll have trouble getting it running... maybe I'd be best to try and emulate it first Also : that was a terrific vid, as usual. Very well scripted. Your vids have this great balance of : giving lots of detail, yet each description never outstays it's welcome. And the points you choose to discuss are always the coolest, funnest parts of a subject, so that keep things extremely focused. 0% filler here. Shitposter Duane Surprisingly enough, it actually did! But Anex86 doesn't support any MIDI module/device though, it's other emulators like T-98 Next and Neko Project II that support them... I know that Touhou, V.G.2 and Valkyrie the Power Beauties support MIDI but I'm not aware of other games that do, but that has to do with the fact that I'm not really interested in MIDI music on the PC-98 because, well, I kind of prefer the FM sound over MIDI >w>';

For the record, you COULD play PC98 games on normal PCs, if you installed a certain version of DOS V/J which was around in 1998. Sadly, there were plenty of sound issues, and some games were completely unplayable at certain points, but sure you could play the majority of them. "There are a lot of hentai games in the PC98" is a serious understatement. Go check the PC98 archives out there and you will find that the majority of games were actually games with porn or porn with some game. Or at least some gratuitous boobies.

Actually there is some good emulators for PC-98 The Anex86 (www.zophar.net/pc98/anex86.html) is quite good, but if you don't download the properly fonts, the text becomes an great mess The T98-Next (www.zophar.net/pc98/t98-next.html) is a good deal to "download, put a rom and start playing" The Neko Project II (www.yui.ne.jp/np2/) (and xnp2) is the emulator where you will get the most fidelity to an original PC-98, but you will need take some time on configuration And last but not less important, there is the DOSBOX-X (github.com/joncampbell123/dosbox-x/releases), who allows you just to mount an folder and unpack the HD rom files right there, but still a beta Btw, both Neko Project and Dosbox-x are open source, so you can even fork and improve the projects These softwares can allow menus in english, but the games... good luck searching translation patches

Another similarity of the IBM PC and NEC PC-98-type machines is the 640K conventional memory barrier imposed when running 16-bit real mode applications. The BIOS, peripherals' memory maps and I/O ports are extremely dissimilar, even the partition table is a custom table, not the standard legacy IBM Master Boot Record or the GUID tables used by [U]EFI when it comes to disk partitioning.
