I've been in iwakuni air base 2016. So nice people there.

I was stationed in Iwakuni 1978-1979, almost 45 years ago!. Wow what a difference. My MOS was 4131, Marine Corps Exchange Man. I worked in the Main Exchange, snack bar, 7 day store/stereo shop, layaway, exchange main office, etc. The MCEX is leaps and bounds better and bigger than when I was there. I imagine the enlisted/NCO club is newer/better. I also wonder if the soup/soba truck still runs on the base. I'll always remember the trucks music. Thanks for the memories.

I was there 75-76. You could walk through the entire MCX in less than 5 minutes. This is from a different planet to me! btw here is a video of the soba truck. Not the same truck but the same tune. kzitem.info/news/bejne/rJypvm1tknWgaG0

Thank you so much! I was there back in 98 as a Marine.. WoW how things have changed!! Can a civi just walk in? Not sure what's happening there.. I would so love to visit. By chance, would you know of any jobs on base for a disabled Marine? Hate to ask, but that would just be a dream.. Peace, take care and thank you again

I was in Iwakuni from 2001 to 2008. Damn base have changed. I wonder what happened to the old MCX?

Kind of sad to see the MCX prices are about the same as they are in the states. PX prices are such a ripoff. Sure, no state tax, but still, it is like shopping at Nordstroms or Macys. I noticed you avoided the liquor department. I would have LOVED to see the prices there. When I was in Iwakuni in 1970, and again in 1975, you could buy a QUART of either Jim Beam or Johnny Walker Black for $5.40 (Can't remember which). And the Japanese yen was 360 to the dollar.

Thanks for this video, I recently about the same time this video came out I was interviewing to be the General Manager of the Crossroad Food Court and a couple other food areas. Seeing the video wouldn't have helped my land the job but, I was looking for a video like this when researching the position. However interviewing for a different job on base more suited to my talents.

I'm sorry, the old everything is gone at the base. The base was rebuilt. The old Exchange is now a parking lot... I hate the cold, but I too loved the people.

Being a civilian living outside the military bases and working in Tokyo, it’s just weird knowing the fact that a few miles away there’s stores that are exactly like the ones you see in the states. I’m satisfied in what I get in Japanese supermarkets, don’t get me wrong but... Strange.

Hey, when you're in Tokyo, can you take a vid of a consumer electronics store. When I was there in 1997, their electronics was 10 years more advanced the U.S. They had Mp3 players 6 years before the IPOD was released, HDTVs 10 years before we saw them in the U.S. I'd like to see what kind of rockin electronics they got now.

There is a Yamada just down the street, its the same as Tokyo. I'm not big on electronics so I dont really know where to go. I will do the Yamada thing as soon as I can.

It is not the same anymore. I went to Japan in 2005 and there were electronics I never seen before, however I lived in Kyoto in 2016-2017, and went to Bic Camera and Yotobashi(I still have my gold card), there was nothing ground breaking or years ahead, maybe robots like Pepper??(Softbank's robotic division) Really it is a shame.

How did you get permission to film on base?
@retirementinthephilippinesvlog
4 жыл бұрын
Everybody films on base. But, in any case I lived there and I was careful not to show anything that would compromise the safety of the base. It's funny, but AFN had a video when they opened the new store too, but I wanted to use my own. AFN has a lot of videos of the bases, that's where I got the idea. I see a lot AFN cameras right next to mine a lot of the time.

I was in Kuni in the late 80s to early 90s, then '97 to 2001. This is not the Kuni I remember. Everything looks different. Can't even recognize outside.

@@retirementinthephilippinesvlog Darn! Would've been a dream to go back and see all the old places I remember before they got replaced. My whole childhood memories practically reside in Kuni. Some good things must come to an end, I guess. Thanks for the update and videos.

As for us, we really never got into the bases. It was always getting out and exploring around the new home where we was stationed. We went all over the world, and now retired in the Philippines, and loving it.....
