I had an opportunity to drive a 1963 Morgan +4 while at university in the spring of 1967. An Art History professor I knew from Northern Ireland had it for sale and was kind enough to let me drive it one evening. The experience was beyond words. It was right hand drive, dark red and the quintessential English sports car. Even though the total experience lasted less than a half an hour, the memory will last me a lifetime. If I were extremely wealthy, I would definitely own a fleet of them. There is no car like them on earth!

The car still looks great, particularly in dark green. Being an old petrol-head, I don't find "start" buttons, or turbo engines to be an improvement. Give me the simple naturally aspirated engines with a good manual transmission in an entry level car. The way the world is going should not be what the Plus 4 follows. But I'm sure they felt that they had to.

I started my Morgan experience with a M3W which I owned for 4 years and I am a happy owner of a 4wheeled Morgan now. By far the better choice . The 3wheeler is great fun for a short time but the construction is bad. It is unreliable. But if you want to deal with all the shortcommings it is up to you.

I had always promised myself upon retirement a Morgan, a car that I would never need to replace with the latest fastest and supposed newest rebirth every other week. A car that i would drive happily until I finally lost my marbles, and handed it over to my children to enjoy and they to theres, however when I went to purchase one I started reading all the horror stories of London's congestion and Low Air Pollution charges which would and are getting ever more stringent, and ever more expensive, and yes I realise Morgan's meet the current standards but what in 3 or 5 years time so unless it's all electric. So Tragically my Morgan dream is now a bicycle...ho hum.
@billmcgill3739
4 жыл бұрын
Congestion applies to any car (or bike). As a Yank, I can't speak to your LAP charges but (1) it's a modern BMW engine and (2) if you can afford the Morgan I'm guessing the pollution charges are not critical. Go buy the beastie! I'm 72 and working on a decision for my best final ride. Can't take it with you!
@jameshamilton6096
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill it's not that simple, the congestion charge is currently £15 on my existing cars and the new emissions charge is similar so thats about £30 per day every day that I want to go anywhere in London in a car plus parking charges etc it's nuts, I own a number of vehicles all of which will incur both charges I am now reluctant to buy another even if it currently passes all the present requirements, As it has been announced the emission test will increase by serverity by another 25% within a 2 year period and no doubt continue to increase year on year with both charging areas of London due to be expanded substantially shortly, meaning almost all current cars will fail within a few years except tragically 100% electric. And here's the issue a Morgan is for life, not just Christmas. It's a car one keeps until burial and then it's passed on within the family, that's it that's one of its main selling points and my sole reason for purchase and that's what I had planned. So now I either buy a short lived electric vehicle or a classic vehicle of at least 40 years of age that by passes all these requirements and fullfills all mine.
@billmcgill3739

@@jameshamilton6096 Per day ...that is nuts. I'm starting to think many people will start new swings to the suburbs and work remotely or at new jobs close to home. Between Pollution regs, Covid, and poor commuter public transport, city life is becoming untenable. I feel for all of us. Car enthusiasts are being squeezed. I'm not anti electric (fast!) but reasonably affordable and some exciting styling are in short supply so far. Hey, best of luck in achieving your solution! (And thanks ... It doesn't really look old school enough as the ratio of width of vehicle to its length is wrong for a classic british sportscar of this design. I understand the concessions for modern safety and convenience, but these don't look as good as the older cars if you are after the classic proportions of a typical old British sportscar.

I think the price is more than acceptable for a hand-made car. The PlusSix needs a manual, too. So, for me, even though I'm a bigger chap and love in-line sixes, and even though I have no problems with autos in most other cars, I would have to choose the PlusFour manual from the current Morgan line-up. Love it but find it such a tough price point. Anyone who can just about afford 60k for a "toy" car, will play it safer and go for a conventional more useable choice (i.e. porsche) and anyone who can easily afford a 60k "toy" car probably has enough for supercars, or actual classic cars.

The BMW parts are probably a big factor why this is out of financial reach or reason to me. I'd rather have a kind of 4/4 with less power and cheaper parts for the Morgan experience. At this price I'll choose any Lotus, Ariel or even Alpine before this - it's really not a sort of quirky bargain.

My wife would still want parking sensors 😂 In all seriousness, a very passionate and informative review. You clearly communicated the difference between the old, the new and the plus 6

Interesting that Morgan picks up where Wiesmann left off, by using BMW drivetrains. Shame Wiesmann went bankrupt, though it seems they've been revived.

Not only will companies like morgan survive the autonomous apocalypse, they will thrive. Assuming they're not forced out of business...

Watching this video as I am looking to rent a Morgan for a 1k miles tour across Cornwall and south England. I liked the comment "maybe you are crazy and would like to do 300 miles in this car" and that scares me a lot. Is it about reliability or more like comfort?

I don't think we need to worry about autonomy in vehicles. I don't see our generation or even our kids seeing this come into fruition. Maybe our grandkids will start seeing the beginning of it but I don't see this happening in this century at least. This is a pipe dream for many like flying cars once were. For autonomy to happen, every human driver needs to be taken off the road for such a system to be effective and safe to implement which will require cars to essentially "talk to each other." Unpredictable human behavior from drivers sharing the road vehicles using with these systems can spell disaster as an autonomous car cannot make split decisions that can save a life due to programming limitations. Not to mention major infrastructure changes to get this to function. I think all these companies investing in this "autonomous driving" are just wasting their money away and should put all their efforts into improving the electric car technology instead.
