First off what a brilliant man. Not only is he brilliant but his way of teaching is so down to earth and easy for everyone to understand. He also appears to be very respectful and goes out of his way to show off other professors and scientists brilliant work. I would be proud to sit in on any of his lectures or classes. Not only has he kept his integrity over the many years of doing this but puts out these free video classes to help people understand. Much respect to you Mr. Bruce Bugbee and thank you to Shuyang zhen and Marc van iersel for the research you have also done and helped us with. You help growers and people such as myself stay up to date with your new research and understanding of lighting on our plants. I am now on my 3rd apogee meter now that I have purchased the new epar mq610. Thanks for all of your hard work.

My first engineering job was in non-imaging optics, so I have some small understanding of the optics involved and thank you for an excellent presentation. Is there, or could you make, a brief video showing WHAT you do to a cannabis crop under study? Basic, generic, SOP. The how, why, and medium are less important. Things like defoliation, simple explanation of pest prevention, how you harvest. The process , not which effect is being tested or its result. I believe that that would help many of us laymen understand your results with better clarity. Thank you-

So now we should use more red from veg through flower ? I have been under the impression that supplemental red in the 660 range was to be added in flower and far red 730 for just end of light cycles. I have both on separate drivers and the 730 is only at end of 12 hour for about 10 minutes. How is the far red best used from this new data?

@Industrious420

How does this study relate directly to cannabis growth? You said a few years ago that the far red spectrum was really only impactful to lettuce. Now I see this video and nothing about cannabis is mentioned. Is 700-750 spectrum range necessary for cannabis in large amounts or do the manufacturers have it correct?

So what is the difference between the SQ610 and the SQ620 if they can both read extended PAR ranges? I just purchased the PQ620 btw. Love your work!
@ApogeeInstrumentsInc
3 жыл бұрын
Hi! For more details on the difference between the SQ-610 series and the SQ-620 series, please visit our webpage: www.apogeeinstruments.com/epar-and-epfd-sensors/. The main difference is the older SQ-620 has a really wide spectral range so it is not recommended for photosynthetic radiation measurements under any light source except LEDs because it can pick up the higher wavelengths emitted by HID lights and the sun that do not drive photosynthesis. Whereas the new ePAR sensors (SQ-610 and MQ-610) now have a more restricted spectral sensitivity range from 380-760 nm, so they can make accurate photosynthetic radiation measurements under any light source, including HIDs and the sun. By far, most growers will now want to get the brand new SQ-610 and MQ-610 ePAR versions that just came out on Feb 16, 2021. The SQ-620 you have is an excellent tool, but again it's best used for special research projects and only for photosynthetic radiation measurements in LED setups where you know you're not getting wavelengths above about 750 nm. Hope that helps. Email techsupport @ apogeeinstruments.com if you have additional questions.

How would this impact the grow within cannabis? When would a 380-400 nm be acceptable, (seedling, veg, flower) and when would a far red be acceptable for maximized proficiency.
@charleslyons829
3 жыл бұрын
it's going to benefit the entire time. Blue inhibits cell expansion (stem elongation). green facilitates human vision ( plant diagnostics), red causes efficient photosynthesis. far red enhances cell expansion. These are found in the 360-760 range ( as is the purple 360). Add some LST or cropping with lollipopping and you have plant that focuses energy on the colas while controlling height through plant stress. If you look at this from an outdoor grow.....autumn has more red hues (far red) which correlates to the plant being in flower. I still stick with entire time answer tho.... there are benefits to the plant during the entire range. If you are looking for more yield...the most light possible as close as possible without burning them 2. dont over water 3 dont over feed. I leave you with this relayed by Bugbee: The best fertilizer, are the footsteps of the farmer" Chinese proverb

@@charleslyons829 Thanks for the informative reply. What light company would you recommend for Hydro? (would it be different for cubes, soil?)
@charleslyons829
3 жыл бұрын
@@ahah5164 That's kinda of tricky question to answer. First it depends on size of tent you plan on veg/flow in. Then also it depends on your wallet size also. HLG is a premium light at a premium cost. How long you plan to grow for, PPFD, diodes split (how many red, white, IR, etc), watts pulled from wall, how intense you want your lights. Can you get a decent grow from a 250 watt light, YES, but you are only flow 2 plants max. The ability to be dimmed cannot be understated also!!! The media you are growing in kinda matters depending what company you go with. If you are hydro, I suggest a unit that can withstand higher temps that are humidity driven. I suggest getting two lights...yes i know this sounds crazy... The first light is a comparable to a 250 watt HID...this is for germination and seedling stage. The second light is your Big Boy light. This one will compare to a 5-600 watt HID. This is the one you use for flowering ONLY (less running hours on the unit running it 12/12 instead of 18/6 and then 12/12 stress). Use the little unit to stress for the veg stage and then BIG BOY for flowering. It's cheaper to replace the smaller light also.

@@ahah5164 Low to Mid: Mars Hydro, Viparspectra, Vivosun, Bloom Plus are all viable options. Stay away from units that look like boxes and have fans...to many moving parts and heat...... most you can daisy chain is 600w total between 2 units.

@ApogeeInstrumentsInc
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sim Racing Veteran - The MQ-500 is a fine choice for your light. Looking at the spectral output of the HLG Scorpion Diablo (horticulturelightinggroup.com/products/hlg-scorpion-diablo), the light has minimal emission in the far-red region (700 - 750 nm). The MQ-500 measures photon flux from 400 - 700 nm which will capture the vast majority of the photosynthetic photon flux from your fixture. If your light had more far-red emission, you could consider our MQ-610 which is our new ePAR meter (400 - 750 nm).

If it isn't longer in wavelength than 780 nm it isn't truly infrared and if it's longer than 380 it isn't really Ultra Violet. Can we just skip straight to Photobiologically Active Radiation (PbAR) as the Farmer in the Sky has been calling for , lo this past decade or so? These would break the frequencies out by Relative Amplitude and, as we learn more, Daily Radiation Index (DRI). Not to be a party-pooper but did they just reinvent the "Emerson Effect" at slightly higher wavelengths?
