A "coach" whose first introduction to the team is telling a bunch of teenage female athletes they all need to lose weight and then singling out a particular one in front of the others? In today's reality, he wouldn't have a job the next day. Even if he wasn't fired, the team would probably band together and refuse to show up to any practice or game where he was coaching. (like Varsity Blues) The interaction with the rich girl would have been much more satisfying if he hadn't already proven he was a bully instead of a coach worthy of respect.

@@ytadventurer9170 riiiight, because a sports coach has NO idea of what an athletic body actually looks like. Sounds as if "body positivity" has reduced another brain to intellectual pudding. You wanna excel, you gotta put in extra work. It is why I never went out for sports.

@@ytadventurer9170 I guess you are foreign to winning or never play sport in your life. He was hired as "Coach". It's not a democracy. He is not bullying, he is setting boundary. @ytadventurer9170

@@dirtyfingers1623 First of all, I prefaced by saying "In today's reality..." Especially when he was just fired from being a college coach for throwing a chair at a referee, and only got the job at an all girl's private school BECAUSE Louise's very rich father wanted a good coach for his girl, the ice he would have been walking would already have been razor thin. Also, like it or not, rich kids have power and influence in the real world. Insulting an entire team of them, specifically calling them overweight, is quick way to guarantee they use ALL of the power and influence they have at their disposal against you. Finally, there's the actual fact that NO real basketball coach is going to be concerned over 5 pounds or less. Kevin Garnett and Shaq are about the same height. Shaq weighs 100 pounds more, and had an arguably better career. Meanwhile, anyone doing an extended heavy workout or intense sporting event can lose 5-10 pounds over a couple hours. Most importantly... it's all completely fictional. Taking the time to argue that his speech is nothing but an unrealistic, dramatic plot device is honestly kind of stupid. It's just less stupid than arguing that it ISN'T.

As a former teacher, absolutely no. Respecting students does not gain respect from students. There are literally thousands of videos explaining this if you’re interested. As for the “lose 5 pounds,” there are BMI limits for school athletes to minimize the risk for permanent joint injuries. That’s a common conversation for child athletes with rising BMIs in good schools, but not usually in front of other kids. In bad ones they say nothing until the kid passes the BMI limit then cuts them for being too overweight to compete, which is emotionally more devastating. But it’s about physical health and safety and legal liability.

At the end of class, the principal called me aside and demanded I apologize to her because her dad (a known drug dealer) was a major contributor. I refused. My contract was not renewed at the end of the year. I didn’t mind. I wasn’t about to suspend my principles for a drug dealer’s daughter. She was simply trying to survive. It's a learnt behavior. Learnt culture. It's even unconsciously done in a very deep subconscious way. Understanding different realities within this world. Coach needs to understand that too. He wants to re-condition the kids minds yet failing to understand that he also needs to recondition their mind/mentality, and believes. Physiologically and psychologically reconditioning. They are kids all trying to survive and dealing with their world. Not everyone should be a coach. Can't set a statement by judgment. I did not find him disrespectful, a bit forthright but he was right, if you’re going to be on a sport team that is competitive, you don’t need players who are overweight or unhealthy. That last girl she was chewing gum while playing sport,it is a chocking hazed right of the bat. If she had done that back in the day when I was that age, it was an instant benching by the coach, but he would have made all of us run around the court 10 times because of her, for every attitude from any member of the team the whole team got punished. It’s called self monitoring, after the 6th time of being told to run 10 circuits of the court the team started to realised if one was out of line all got punished, that made them force the trouble makers to back off with their attitude. Teachers today do not have the balls to do their job like they did back in the 60’s and 70’s even the 80’s teachers were better than those that followed on from the 90’s to the current day. To many of the new teachers out today are so focused on their pronouns and gender that they forgot that they are there to teach only not to be their buddies, and their focus on the LGBT rights of children who should not even know what sex or gender is about until they are in their mid teens when their hormones have kicked in and they start noticing their opposites is way off base. He as a teacher is how teachers use to be 40 years ago. Not interested in being their mate, that’s not his job, his job was to make the fit and healthy only.

@@dawsie "Not interested in being their mate" actually that's more of his job than making them healthy and fit. It's not the NBA, they are a high school girls basketball team. They are literally there to have fun. He should be encouraging fitness but NEVER by disrespecting or downing the kids in any way whatsoever, that hurts ALL the kids in the long run. It's the coaches job to be competent enough to realize his job is NOT to control the team and weed out players, but to encourage confidence and competence in the players and mostly to be a good role model. When teachers are disrespecting students for ANY reason, the students learn that it's normal and even okay to treat people this way into adulthood and its not.
