A well constructed assessment of the large picture influences guiding these new options analysing yield, kernel recovery and whole kernel. Geographically the trial locations indicate the weather and soils. The time till commercial cropping & spacing to fit within existing orchards provides an overview of substance. Peter in Vol. 9 appears to be across most of the on-farm realities that you will encounter in your locality and his assessment of the marketing portion of our levy investment into South Korea and the direction being presently undertaken will influence the future of the industry. Our levy portion invested in ongoing R & D has been well spent. As you recorded in Vol. 8 "two-thirds of the weight is in the shell" and my expectations from 344's is that a 33% crack-out was good. Your intuition has guided your logical favour for the A376 and among your existing varieties will offer greater pollination over the whole orchard. The jury may be out but "all is resolved in the fullness of time" is the verdict that will be reached. Bruce :)

Thanks for the feedback Bruce. What's your take on the early vs late dropping macadamia varieties? Maybe take that one on notice and I'll ask you on camera some time.

I still think MCT-1 with A203 as a pollinator is a good safe bet here in the northern rivers.

You could be right Matt. I just wish those who raised the MCT-1 had included it in the regional variety trials, which tracked exactly when all the varieties flower. A203 wasn't in those trials either, admittedly, so we'd still be asking questions about whether these two flower at a compatible time. MCT-1 is a poor self-pollinator so it's an important planning issue. In terms of cropping the A203 drops a lot earlier than MCT-1, so there's not a great match there. I like the idea of matching MCT-1 and R, because the tree sizes are smallish and they both drop late. R also flowers late so I'm not sure how well that'll play with MCT-1. The reason 246 is such a champion polleniser is that it flowers heavily over a long flowering period. My choice of 783 was because it's like 246, but flowers more heavily later, and drops its nuts when R (and MCT-1) does. That's not without its drawbacks either - 783 is big like a 246 and I'll need to keep them in check over time.

@@nutkinfarm for anyone reading this, the ams did an update on MCT-1 last year back in their magazine they send out, A203 was a recommended pollinator and I was around for flowering this year, they both flower at the same time. Drop patterns not so much an issue for me.

@@mattmacadamia1336 oh that’s valuable info - did it say whether it’s early or late flowering?

Please can you tell me if any of these new A varieties are dwarf varieties. I want to get some dwarfing varieties if possible. I'm yet to be convinced of any dwarf tree varieties except for possibly the A16. I am moving to a rural property where I'll have the room to plant many different macadamia tree varieties. It's interesting how I have had no problems with either the A4 or HAES 816 varieties, but they seem to be problematic in the eastern states for different reasons. Both the A4 and HAES 816 have both produced well over the last 14 years. I'm moving to the SW of WA which is still OK climatically for growing macadamias, but the property I'm moving to doesn't have any macadamia trees growing there, but does have pecans and pistachios.

Hi John! The dwarfing varieties here are the A447 and A538. In other recent releases you could try variety P and even MCT-1, but those two will be a little larger.

The only ones worth planting in my view are A376 and A538

I agree Trent - with a wary eye on the A538, as David Bell admits it’s a bit fussy and fickle, like the A4. I heard that A376 was bred from A203 but have no way to confirm that, so I left it out of the video.

@@nutkinfarm I would like to see how a A4x660 would go with the thin shell of both but try get more size into the 660 or more internal crop from A4 I believe would be great

@@trentneumann5788 believe it or not, I have A4s planted right in the next row from 660s. It could be subjective but I find those A4s a little small and the 660s a little bigger than other ones away from the A4s!
