This grinder puts out the most consistent grinds i have ever witnessed in a grinder, the people complaining about the button are lame, this grinder is amazing the sound is superb, easy to clean, an integral part of the brew recipe with my moccamaster (setting 4.5) and French press brews (setting 6) FTW - everyone can afford this grinder, it pays for itself.

Just received my grinder today and has an exorbitant amount of retention. There was retention in the hopper, retention in the grinder and retention in the exit shoot. I was really hoping to stop having to water my beans after coming from a fellow ode gen 1. The grinder itself is high quality and grinds great. Huge retention problem, much worse than the fellow ode gen 1.

I am not normally critical of these reviews but I can’t help but wonder why you did not test this grinder for consistency/size/quality of grind. After all….it’s a grinder.

Well, it looks very Moccamaster like. Price is a bit steep, it looks like the eureka line in terms of burr size and burr adjustment.

If I were to guess, I'd say this is the Eureka Mignon Perfetto. It's the only Eureka filter grinder that has an adjustment knob that hits all of the grind sizes in one revolution. (Edit): I was wrong. The Perfetto has a 55mm burr. The KM5 has a 50mm burr. However, it does have a 310 watt motor that is hard to come by in the U.S. market. Must be why it is so heavy and has quite the kick. I can't wait to get mine.

Solid early product review. Good usable info and some good perspective. One suggestion, and I hate to be that guy, but you might be surprised how many times you used the word “actual” and I can’t think of a time that it was necessary. That said, keep up the good work!

There is an unanswered question: What micron range does it cover? Since it is intended for filter brewing I bet it wont grind as fine as 200 microns.

I have a Rancilio Rocky grinder and it has a switch like this. The weight of the Rocky makes it secure and not move. Even has the “1 bean holder” feature haha. Not worth me changing, as the Rocky can handle espresso too.

No espresso grind? Why even make a grinder then? My KitchenAid coffee burr grinder dial from flour like espresso grind to filtered coffee all for $200. Absolutely awesome machine. Highly recommend over this grinder. Seriously.

Yeah, my Baratza Encore died and I'd love to go back to freshly ground AND yeah, it'd look cool next to the Moccamaster that has been great. The comments here DO bring out valid points: Switch would bug me, retention etc. I guess I'll consider the new Ode. While not architecturally matching, it may be a better way to drop $300+ Heck the Baratza didn't care that it was next to the Moccamaster :-)

I respect the fact that it doesn't grind espresso. After all, it's for the Moccamaster. But needing to hold the button down while you grind the coffee? If you could just pick a # of cups and have the KM grind it, I would get this for sure. One of my pet peeves about my current grinder is that it grinds 6oz cups and the Moccamaster brews 4oz cups so I have to do a little mental math when I grind. I was really hoping this grinder would solve this for me, but instead I would need to measure the beans each time (how? on a kitchen scale? I just want my coffee) and then hold down the button. Yeesh.
@jufaeristhakha
Жыл бұрын
a little late to the party, but my thoughts are that you could measure your beans once on a scale using the collection cup from the km5, see what line it ends up at and then you would have a visual method going forward from there, no more need to weigh.

Good to see this review. The switch is absolutely absurd. I am often multitasking in the AM like filling up water, wetting paper cone, etc while grinding. Moccamaster - if you want me to buy this dealbreaker here!! Make my morning easier, not harder. Love the look and I’m sure it will be sturdy. I am curious how even it grinds, how loud it is, etc??? How does it compare in taste, fines and TDS when compared to an Encore or Fellow? That is the video I want to see!!

Appreciate the review! Would love to see a comparative taste test at different grind settings. It looks like it's built like a tank plus it's got a 5 year warranty. How well does it single dose (though I don't think MM intended it to be used that way)? It obviously would look great next to your Moccamaster coffee maker.

Depends on your budget. Maybe Baratza Encore ESP? Designed to have that flexibility for $199. The real connoisseur types have multiple grinders for different purposes. I am also looking for one that does everything.

Somewhere else i saw that the finest grind on this could actually be ok for espresso? I have an express impress which has its own grinder but in case it breaks I want a good drip grinder that can also function as a backup for espresso. Thinking about the Baratza Encore ESP but know that is conical. Can someone say if they think flat burrs are indeed better for drip? Many say flat is good for clarity and conical for body?

Don't see the point of holding the button down. Most comparable grinders have freedom of choice, where it grinds itself after starting. Weakly rated by Technivorm. This grinder is not considered for purchase.

This Moccamaster grinder has an all metal direct drive motor with a metal chassis from top to bottom and no plastic to be found. There's just no comparison to quality between the two. Plus, this grinder doesn't sound like a dying goat while it's grinding a dose of beans.

That Baratza is junk. I bought it and the stupid top wouldn’t clip or turn without falling off. I tried to figure out what it was the rubber piece would come off. I think $300 is high, but I much rather spend that much for a high quality item than a Chinese made disposable item.
