After almost a year and a half of silence, the sound of bells rings out across the village once more. Once a 21cwt ring now 10cwt.
The new bells had already made history before they were even hung in tower as they are the first complete peal of bells to be cast by Westley's of Stoke-on-Trent.
The church had almost £2.5 million pounds spent on reordering which included the removal of the pews and relocation of the Rood Screen to underneath the tower. As well as a new sound system the church also has underfloor heating.
The bells, all cast in 2019 were hung by Whites of Appleton and tested on Tuesday 9th July after almost a year and a half of no bells for the village. One quite 'rare' thing about the new ring is that the 2nd is tuned to Fx (double-sharp). While the bells were being refurbished it was decided to have the whole tower refurbished which included re-pointing, new ringing gallery staircase, and the installation of a kitchen and toilet facility. The clock, made in 1859 and was sent to India before being installed in All Saints tower has had an overhaul and the village will once again be able to tell the time and hear the quarterly 'ting-tang' chimes as they have not been working for over 5 years!
I was honoured to be invited to ring in the test ring and, on request from the church and tower captain, visiting bands will be welcome after the new year as further work is still to be completed in the tower.
