Last year I got a set and the hardware kit. I cant count how many times I have used them. I also bought a set of the solid ones. Very useful.

I have a tape measure with a magnetic end. When working alone I can attach it to a 123 block for longer measures and add the proper number of inches to the reading on the tape.

Just ordered a couple of sets of bolts and clamps, I use 123 blocks in my hobby shop. I thing to watch is to clean off any glue quickly before it etches the block. great idea thanks for review Bob

Waxing with a good paste wax would probably help in removing dried glue and keep the glue from etching the blocks

When you get into power tools the uses for these go through the roof. There are so many places for set up line up and adjustment that they are almost necessary.

Oooooooh. Me likey! Those doohickies have just opened up a whole new world of uses for the 123 blocks. Beats using bolts and counter sunk head machine screws to join them together.
@TonberryV

So, this is an excellent solution to cheaply made blocks. Proper 1-2-3 Blocks have smaller tapped holes and are only tapped on one side so the untapped holes are clearance for the screw heads. That way you only need 2 screws and a hex wrench. They're also typically $70 to $100-ish for a pair. Again, wonderfully versatile solution. The real cool thing would be to have these with small t-slot table. So much work holding and fixturing.

With the clamps, one of them would be a good way to create an offset on a table saw fence. This way, you know it's 1", so you can still easily use the measurements on the table saw.

I've always wondered if there would be a way to magnetize 123 blocks. That way they could stick to fences and stuff, so they stay put where you need them. Kind of like Mag Switch.

Would love to see it clamped to a jointer plane as a jointer fence. Maybe it’s not possible because the blade doesn’t run to the edge...
@WoodByWrightHowTo

Yeah. You could do that. You have to do it with two different blocks, one to stick underneath the plane and one to clamp to the sidewall but I don't see why it wouldn't work. That'd be a fun one to try out.

I mean this with all good intent, but those look harbor freight cheap, and starret and others have been making better for almost a century now. If you ever get a chance, spend half a day with an old school machinist, perpetually asking "what's this?" You'd be surprised the number of tools, both homemade and precision manufactured, that would benefit the woodworker in so many ways. For instance, a height gauge and planer gauge is great for measuring hard to reach dimensions when reproducing antique designs. I use it a lot since half my actually paid woodwork is repairing or replacing antique parts. Machinist jacks and sine bars are super useful as well, same as angle bars and parallels. If you've seen Paul Sellers’ tapered leg jig, I've basically took out the side rails and just use parallels, sine bars, angle bars or a combination to make legs of any taper or size. Brake dies are also amazing for bending wood, albeit one bend at a time.. Worn out end mills make great scraper burnishers. There's a plethora of machinist dogs as well that do things you wouldn't even think of, and a mag base is perfect for holding thin blades when sharpening and also helps with applying extra pressure with a diamond plate since they're typically a steel base. You're on the right path though. I like seeing new things, wether it's new to me or not, in the woodworking community that doesn't involve an electric cord, and cross-trade technology just makes the possibilities endless

Bolting setup blocks with threaded inserts does not make a flat surface. Too much play. Could be like 20 thou off square
@WoodByWrightHowTo
2 жыл бұрын
That's why you bolt them together while on a flat surface. There's actually enough playing them to move in and out about 3/8 of an inch.

You would think that after all of these years the red Chinese who make these blocks would use a correct size clearance drill to allow the bolts to pass through the clearance holes.
