When done properly, this movement creates a controlled weight shift with proper alignment of the knee over the ankle and foot. The movement uses the abdominal core muscles on the same side as the leg we are shifting towards. It uses flexion of the opposite side hip. The movement creates reflexive flexion of the knee, which keeps the body vertical.
