Grew up in edmonton, ran into Laraque and a bunch of other players randomly at a local arena during lockout. I had nothing to sign, so they all signed my lunchbox. Laraque and Ryan smith were so memorable for their kindness and coolness as a young kid.

In today's NHL fighting is almost extinct. The NHL wants to go light contact. There is very little place for fighting, or one dimensional players nowadays. There are literally like 7 fighters in the entire NHL now. You need to be able to at least play, to be in the game now. If he can hit, be physical, and contribute, there will be a place for him. If all he can do is fight, he will be gone sooner than later.

The Rangers already adapted this style of play... They were getting bullied around every game. People have been saying this for ages... fighting isn't going anywhere. The players won't allow it. Do you not know the hockey code? They police themselves, and it's safer with fighting allowed.

With the skill and speed of today’s players the only way he will hit someone will either end up being a minor or game misconduct. Smart players will avoid this slug or let him tie them up and get him to take the roughing penalty. He will be gone in a few years with 80GP and 10 points.

@@trvman1Goons have a place even today, but a PURE goon I would agree with you. Physical players still have a place in todays game, but you need to be able to do something else to actually benefit from the goon style. Whether that comes with putting up solid points, a good 2-way game, or being a solid PK grinder; you need something else to compliment the physical play and fights.

The age of fighting in the NHL is not nearly what it was when Georges was doing his dirty work. Even if Rempe became the best fighter in the NHL, how does that help the Rangers? Enforcers are a dying breed and not the intimidating force they once were. How many fights were there in the playoffs this year? I can remember 1 and it was Chuckie vs. Pasta. Last I checked, they can both play the game pretty well.

@@Andrew-tn1mf NHL teams will always need enforcers as long as fighting is allowed. They weren't phased out... certain teams chose to not dress one. The Rangers were one of them. They would constantly get beat up... Now, teams have to think twice before going after Panarin, Zibanejad or Fox

He's hardly the reason the rangers bowed out. Those of you who do not think having a guy like this on your team is an advantage for his players, team and fans, certainly never played hockey. At least high level. Maybe ya did. But it was clearly soft. As long as there is anyone at all on the ice like Tkachuk or a Bennet, anywhere in the NHL, he has a role.

Except Rempe is a waste of space...sure, he can fight. Great. But that's 1 spot on your bench spending 4 min on the ice and 10 minutes in the box making others players do his work. I wouldn't say "afraid". The coaching staff explained to him very carefully when and when not to fight. The time Wilson challenged him the Rangers were winning plus had all the momentum going their way. Wilson himself even admitted that. No way is a rookie kid going to defy his coaching staff, especially in the playoffs.

I saw a snippet of his exit interview this year and he was basically saying he can’t wait to get to work in the off season and work on the weak spots of his game. Yes he will continue to fight most challengers but if he could round out his overall game even slightly every off season he could be a menace of a power forward. Not saying he’s going to be Milan Lucic but if he’s committed to staying in the big leagues which I’m sure he is he could quickly become less of a reckless punk and more of a player gms stumble over themselves to replicate. I wasn’t a huge fan of his early in the season I will admit. I’m a caps fan so it’s tough to root for any Ranger but this kid is growing on me and I’d like to see him succeed.

Fighting, especially the way Georges did it, is about balance. Yes, he could overpower a lot of guys, but he could also take on guys even bigger and stronger than he was, thanks to his skating. This could turn out to be nothing, but it's possible that Rempe will end up being a better player in general, depending on what this training actually looks like.

Rempe is bad. Full stop. He hits, fans cheer, the guy he's hit moves on as though he's not been hit. He's not good at fighting, skating, hitting, shooting or passing. It's not clear he should be in the ahl even. He wins faceoffs, which is a real skill, and I respect him trying to live his dream but the most likely result of him being allowed to go up against NHL athletes is he's going to get hurt. Stop this stupid hype, please. He energizes the crowd, which... cool I guess. I don't think the nhl is even slightly chilled, nevermind terrified.

lol that doesn’t say much in this soft league. That kid wouldn’t last a game playing how he plays back when there were real enforcers. He would be a career minor leaguer. I can’t remember the last full game so watched that I actually enjoyed. Berryman has done nothing but destroy the grit, heart’ and passion the players used to play with. gary Bettina has successfully ruined the nhl.

He's barely good enough to get ice time, he should be training how to be a better contributer to his team, instead he's training to fight? That's the last thing he needs. Fighting is dying and Rempe will probably be a career AHL'er at best.

Oh my god he's like the 10th guy in the NHL to have a fighting lesson from Laraque. Kid got completely caved in by Desharnais and I bet it would happen again. Arber Xhakej has had more than one fighting lesson from Laraque and nobody talks about that.. I'm sure the whole league is all caps terrrified.
