That jazz break has got to be one of the coolest live improvisations ever.

Three guys, who really brought out the best in each other. Producing, some of the finest music there is to hear. Brian Davidson, Lee Jackson and Keith Emerson. The Nice.

The first LP I ever bought. Nothing else like it before or since. ELP went a bit over the top, this was great. Their manager went on to form Charisma Records who nurtured Genesis and others.

Keith Emerson at his very best. In the winter semester of 1973 I was a DJ for the night at SUNY Oneonta. This piece was one of the songs I chose to play. Right after Keith rips it up about7:40 of the song, the switchboard started lighting up like a Christmas tree. That is one of the best experiences of my of my life thanks to Keith Emerson performing like a virtuoso with The Nice playing Hang On To A Dream. Simply the best...thanks Keith.

Elegy was released in April 71. ELP were already a huge attraction. The Nice had broken up 12 months earlier.

+ticktack1 I was not sure when it had been released as I wasn't born yet, I assumed it had come out before' ELP' , ELP's first album. but the Nice had already been playing the tracks live for quite some time before the album came out. I checked on the lp sleeve and there's no date on it when it was either recorded or released. but I'm not too worried . ps by the way, Hang on to a dream was recorded in 1969, I presume the other tracks were too , America must have been recorded in 1968; if the album came out in 1971 it must have been due to some unknown reasons to me which must have involved Emerson's contract with the group. By the time Elegy came out Keith Emerson was already living in another world

there's some some really good rare footage of the Nice on KZitem. I saw them in 2003, when they got back together for afew shows and I met Keith and Lee after the show. I saw them at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. Your mums cool

@@tarbuck1 check that, saw them then too, Fairfield Halls in Croydon.. Keith asked if anyone was there when he was last there...5 Bridges recorded live there in '69.. and about a dozen people put their hands up..! WOW.. that was cool..!!

First heard this listening to CHOM-FM Montreal in about 1972. My roommate and I were chemically altered and couldn't believe what we were hearing. I purchased the Elegy album and played it many times. Great memories. 😊

There are half a dozen or so live versions of the Nice performing this between summer 69 and March 1970, when Emerson pulled the plug - and this particular performance at Filmore East in New York ( circa Christmas 69) is almost perfection.
