I worked for Acclaim studios Teesside (Iguana uk) back in this era. Shadowman was the game I worked on, and I loved it on the N64. The studio had done Forsaken 64, and before that NBA JAM. Loved working for this company back then, was a lot of fun. We also had Blank Rom Cartridges and rom burners, so we had access to lots of games ( They also bought a lot of games too! :) ). Nearly everyone I worked with was a gamer and we played games during our break times. We had arcade machines in our break room (NBA JAM, Power Drift etc..) We often played Quake 2 on the network and fought battles against the other studio's within the Acclaim family. It was the rock and roll years of gaming.

It wasn't just the look, it was the controls. When I first dove into water with Mario and made him do a dolphin jump out of the water, I was like, "I NEED THIS." Yes, 4th generation consoles were very different from each other (think how the SNES and Mega Drive were very complementary and had different, or even opposite, strengths and weaknesses) but during the 5th generation the market was even more diverse, especially if you include the "failed" consoles such as Jaguar or 3DO

My brother and I literally spent the first 30 minutes in Super Mario 64 running around outside of the castle, our minds were completely blown by what we were seeing and playing as there was nothing like it at the time. It's hard for people who were not around at the time to understand how the N64 changed gaming, but it was a major paradigm shift and set the mold for how 3D gaming should be. To this day I still have my boxed Japanese copies of Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64, occasionally taking them out to play them even to this day.

WTF , just tell me a fucking game in the other two console libraries back in the 32/64 bits generation that made the kind of IMPACT that Mario 64, Ocarina of Time or Goldeneye did, maybe Final Fantasy VII, but no more, the N64 has not "good games", it has LEGENDARY GAMES, sorry if you don´t like 3D platformers, 3D action games, racers, Mario sports games, Killer Insticnt and Smash Bros, the best shooters of the 32/64 bits gen thats your problem, the Nintendo Wii has 1300 games, but 80% of them are casual bullshit , so what the fuck do I need a library of thousands of games? just give me 20 master pieces that are unforgettable, gime me the fuckin NINTENDO 64

I think most N64 owners will agree with you about those top games you mentioned, but i think that the use of cartrides did had it’s benefits over cd’s, 1 they were robust and more reliable ,2 they were harder to make clones of it,3 they load data within seconds, now it is true that cartrides at the time could only store 1/8 the size size of what CD’s could store, however with today’s technology we can store 100 times more data on a cartride then on a cd,so cartrides have made cd’s pretty much obsolete now.

I was lucky enough to have grown up with both the PS1 and N64 as a kid because they complimented each other so well. The PS1 had all the awesome single-player story-driven games and the N64 provided the best in terms of multiplayer mayhem. I started off with WCW vs. the World on the PS1 and continued with the N64 games. While WCW/nWo Revenge and WWF No Mercy were the best, I have very fond memories of WCW vs. the World with its legendary roster and still regard it as the best wrestling game on the PS1 full-stop. P.S. Super Mario 64 sure as Hell was a life-changing experience for this gamer. When I first played it when I got my N64, I had no idea about the experience I was about to have. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask perfected the groundwork Super Mario 64 laid down.

The N64 was a fantastic console - I had a PS1 back in the day and my brother had the 64 (which he let me play when he was in the mood). One of the games he had was Diddy Kong Racing, which was brilliant. The reason another game in the series was never released though was because Rare, who made DKR, were bought by Microsoft. At the time they were working on a sequel, Donkey Kong Racing, for the Gamecube, but this never saw the light of day. As someone else mentioned, Diddy Kong Racing was re-released years later for the DS (which Microsoft allowed as they don't have a handheld console, so saw no problem with allowing Rare to release games on the GameBoy Advance and DS). Nintendo don't own the rights to the game or characters however, so can't make or release updated versions or sequels of their own.

I agree, the 64 was the first Nintendo system i genuinely liked. It was a departure toward older gamers in my opinion. My favorite behind the switch in Nintendo consoles.

The Saturn was better designed than the Nintendo 64; the only reason that the 64 succeeded was that Nintendo valued their IP's far more than Sega did.

Lol, I a N64 and it would not hook up to my tv. God bless my parents. They took me straight to walmart to get a tv I could play it on. I had the best tv in the house. I had that 200 lb tv for 20 years.

Another great video! The N64 was the last truly magical console experience for me. I had just turned 20 years old when it launched in Japan in June '96 and I picked up my day one import machine, so part of that might be down to its arrival coinciding with my transition from adolescent to adult, but there was just something very special about the first party games on that system. Firing up Mario 64 for the very first time was quite possibly the most incredible and magical gaming experience I've ever had.

Man, what I hated was how Nintendo and others slapped "64" on the end of many game titles. And I hated "Super" everything the generation before. I wasn't a fan of Nintendo's marketing and branding at all. N64 is an odd system. Some people absolutely love it. Some hate it or have no interest in it. There aren't a lot of people in the middle. I don't hate it, but I do fall in the latter category. I never found the system all that appealing, even back in its day. I did play Mario 64 a few times in 1996 and 1997 and it did make me consider the system, briefly, but it was not enough for me and I let the idea slip away. I would never say the system lacked quality games, but it's an odd library, and its best stuff never did much for me. It definitely lacked the kinds of things I was into. And the library was slim, as I recall, in the early days. I can appreciate hearing experiences like yours, however. Even I had fun whenever I got to play N64 in stores and at friends' houses. The N64's odd library is both its strength and weakness and made it a good supplemental console if you already had a Playstation or Saturn(or perhaps the Saturn would be the secondary to the N64, due to the Saturn not being popular). While the platform wasn't interesting to me, I knew your video on it would be quite good, so great job on it and thanks for sharing.

Good thing then the Mega Drive changed its name to the Genesis in America, as they were doing the same gimmick naming Genesis games "Mega" after the Mega Drive and the name change defused the gimmick for anyone who didn't find it punny.

@@autobotstarscream765 Fair point, and it definitely helped that they had to change the name. Still, leave it to Sega to be inconsistent and come up with The Super Shinobi and Super Fantasy Zone.

My 1st games were Mario64, Cruis'n USA, WaveRace64, and Killer Instinct Gold. I couldn't get enough of Killer Instinct 2 and Cruis'n USA in the Arcades. Literally. Couldn't get enough it was all that was on my mind. At that time I only had NES and Genesis, and was using Sega Channel at home. But when I found out about the n64 I moved from 16 bit to 64. I skipped the CD/32bit consoles but played PS1, Saturn and even 32x at friends homes regularly and just waited for something like the 64. Mario 64 was the 1st truly 3D game I owned and left an insane impression. Forgot all about the Sega Channel and it went back to the cable store.

World Tour, Revenge, WrestleMania 2000 and No Mercy were all developed by AKI Corporation. That's why those games felt so great compared to WCW Nitro and Thunder, which were also published by THQ, but developed by another company. If you loved those games, you should check out Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. They also worked on Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight For NY.

I remember going to the mall in 1996 seeing Mario 64 and thinking Sega is in trouble! Understand I really really liked the Saturn, but the writing was on the wall as soon as i saw Mario 64 i knew just knew the Saturn was done. Mario 64 was that good, it had the graphics that could not be done on the PSX or Saturn and Mario 64 WAS THAT GOOD. To this day Mario 64 is still one of my fav games ever! To this day we have not had a Sonic game that was as good as Mario 64...Ugh I know Sonic is 2d goodness, but I would love a Sonic game in 3d that had the same effect as Mario 64 did....I know Sonic Adventure is Great, but it is not at the same level as Mario 64...

Much like yourself, in terms of home consoles, I grew up in the 80's with the NES, and then moved to the Mega drive, etc. but still, even though the mid 90's Playstation, Saturn, N64 console war, wasn't my first rodeo at all, it's still my favorite time period in home console gaming, and will forever be that. Such exciting advancements at the time, and three stellar machines, as the Saturn and PS1 will always be my favorite consoles of all-time, and I love the N64 as well. Great video!
