Today we talk about the nitty-gritty of the waterfront in Queens.
1. LOCATION
The Gantry Plaza State Park is located on the westside of Queens, right along the East River in the neighborhood of Long Island City. The park is right across from 42nd street in Manhattan and from here you have the most amazing skyline views of the city. The area is actually split into two separate parks. The north end is called Gantry Plaza State Park while the more southern area is the Hunter’s Point South Park. When you are in the park you will not notice a difference or know when you walk from one park into the next, though. They seamlessly flow into each other.
2. ACCESSIBILITY
The parks are easily reachable by subway, cab or ferry. The Vernon/Jackson stop on the 7 line is the closest to the waterfront and just minutes away from Times Square or Grand Central Terminal. The E, G and M subway stops are close by as well. If you prefer a cab you just need to cross the Queensboro Bridge or pass the Midtown tunnel and you are right there. Or enjoy a short ride on the East River Ferry. Both parks have a ferry stop.
3. PRIVACY
The Queen’s waterfront is still somewhat of an insider tip. During the week it is pretty quiet and you can find lots of nooks and crannies for your ceremony. The weekend, however, can get pretty busy over here. Especially in the warmer months. We are happy to help with a timeline that works for this location so that you are not caught in a time when the parks are super busy.
4. PERMITS
The Gantry Park is a State Park and therefore - in theory - you have to apply for a permit. Talk to us and we will give you some more details and tips regarding the process. Hunter’s Point South - on the other hand - is a City Park and requires no permit if you have less than 20 people attending your wedding.
5. WEATHER
There are barely any covered areas in the parks that could shelter from bad weather. The Queen’s waterfront definitely shines during good weather.
6. THE NITTY-GRITTY
We love the Gantry Plaza State Park and Hunter’s Point South Park. We love the views of the city from here. The parks are easily reachable and in an area of the city that hardly any visitor knows about. The weekends can get quite busy, however. So make sure to keep that in mind when planning your wedding. Also, bad weather can be a challenge as there are hardly any covered areas in the area.
As always, please reach out with any questions you have. We are always happy to help. Until next time…
