Both have valid points but homework is primarily an opportunity for oneself to learn more deeply the lesson that had just been taught by the teacher in the classroom. It’s not merely a chore to occupy time (Tyrus’s argument). It’s a time when the student crystallizes his comprehension of the knowledge conveyed to him by a mentor. In a way, homework is a learner’s chance to be self-taught.

If teachers are good enough they should be able to teach children in a 6-hour day with no homework. The problem is that kids aren't taught memory techniques and how to properly organize their time while in school. It can be done. Remember the Sylvan advanced learning courses? They were used to help kids who were behind in school. Kids can learn faster if taught the proper skills.

When I was in school I had chores to do when I got home. I got off the bus around 4 PM and had real life responsibilities to take care of for the next 2 - 4 hours which where I grew up in, rural farm life America, that was normal for pretty much everything but the city kids. Now as for having homework, sure I had it but I never bought that crap home. If it couldn't be done in school it wasn't going to be done period. And for how I turned out? Well, I have two college degrees, one in technical trades work and one in engineering and to top it off I am 43 and have not had to work for a living if I didn't want to for about 4 years now. Everything I own is paid for (actually building a second house for myself largely by myself now too) because for the first near 20 years of my working life I lived responsibly and within my means al while putting every spare dime I had into investing in my future life so that I would not be stuck in some job I hate until I am too old and bitter to care, like the majority of people will be.(likely the same people who did the homework because they thought it was going to get them some place in life.)

The most important things you learn are not always taught in schools. Most people learn that lesson too late for them to do anything about it. Study, learn, do your homework. However, keep it in its place. The people who are the most successful in life learn to read between the lines and realize that teachers although very smart are only privileged academics living in Ivory Towers who have never really worked in the real world of business and politics. Therefore, teachers can only teach what they know. The rest is up to students to learn on their own. The real world and the world of academia are 2 separate universes.

I have an IQ in the 140's BUT I hated and did not do any in high school and graduated with C's and spent my working life in mfg. If more of my grade was determined by in class learning I most likely would have been better off.

in the early 70's, i attended a school in which an experimental program called "open classroom" was being tried. in this environment, we, the students, could move around the room freely, study what we wanted and generally "do our own thing." this include NO HOMEWORK. while i can't speak for everyone, this was a disaster for me. as a child (and adult), i've been dealing with an almost paralyzing case of ADHD. this lack of external discipline and my lack of self-discipline set a tone for my entire life. for decades i avoided education and stuck to simple jobs. in my mid forties i finally took a chance on learning and after my woeful lack of background, found that starting over from scratch was VERY difficult. parents, make your kids study and do their homework. when they tell you, "I'm never going to use this, anyway." tell them that no knowledge is useful until use have a need for it.

Homework is to re-enforce lessons learned in class what was learned in class. If a student isn't feeling well, they could miss whole lessons in class. Homework will catch them up. They shouldn't have so much homework they have zero time for family and friends, but a balance is needed. My response was to the school, the "debate" was pretty funny!

I loved this one guys!!! Totally awesome! On the subject though I think homework is a bad idea. If you don't finish an assignment at school then yes take it home and finish it. But otherwise homework should not be a sanctioned practice. It hurts families when the kid comes home already tired from all day at school, grab a bite of something to eat, and often back out the door for extracurricular activities, jobs, chores, or whatever. They get in late enough that there is no real time to eat with the family, communicate with family, bathe, decompress and get to bed in time to get the needed sleep for optimum health if they also have homework to do too. And really we pay teachers to teach. That means THEY teach it, help with problems, guide through information and transfer knowledge to our kids. OUR jobs are to raise our children, teach them morals, interpersonal relationship skills, religion, manners and etiquette, love and encouragement, and everything else that makes children grow and become good, productive, and responsible citizens. School is for learning academic skills not for all day childcare and afterschool babysitting with paid employees raising our children and filling their heads with who knows what for morals and causing a total breakdown in the family. Rant over.

I told my teachers and my parents this. None of them had a counter-argument. None of them were going to pay me to do what I was already doing at school, at home. My parents were fine with it because I got As and Bs. My teachers thought it was selfish of me to have my afternoons off while everyone else had homework. Parents fine. Teachers not. Too bad. 6 hours a day, 5 hours a week should be PLENTY to cover the required course work. Maybe junior or senior year, they should have college-prep work in a semi-college format, where the class meets 3 days a week, with 6 hours out of class required, with 2 of those hours in the classroom, transitioning to the 2-hours-out-for-every-hour-in that is the expectation for college math, for example. In high school, they spend a whole year on courses that receive one semester in college, meeting 3 times per week, with an expectation of 6 hours of work outside of class for the average student. College Algebra can be easily covered with little or no homework in one year. Sneak in the trigonometry in one semester, with a fair amount (but less than college amount) of homework, and the student has an idea of the level of effort required at the next level. Fact is, we cover stuff in high school at a snail's pace AND send kids home with a pile of homework, and they still don't come to college with the skills they need. It's not a homework or not-homework question. It's a question of what they're doing in the classroom.

The teachers repeat simple operations over and over and race though complex calculations and rules and exceptions to rules leave most student dazed, confused, and defeated. Thinking they cannot master math because they are stupid, they give up. What we need are good math teachers. I never found a good math teacher in HS, and only 1 in college algebra. As a retired public school teacher who spent forty years deliberately teaching thoroughly so I did not have to waste student off school time doing homework. Assigned homework is simply a sign of bad teaching. Now as for inspiring students to pursue their gifts and talents, that's another story. At least I did not rob them of time and energy to pursue many other important things in life. Teachers would also have more time and energy to teach well if they did not have to waste so much time, energy, and money preparing their students for the standardized tests that mindless bureaucrats and politicians seem to think have anything to do with education.
