Apparently eggers said that there was a lot of studio interference in this movie , a lot of scenes he wanted to do was disallowed . I presume due to the large budget of this movie . As always Grace - great review and enjoyable analysis. . . I like history stuff. The Vikiings are one of those anomalies where it can be interesting . . . but the sheer brutality of the way they fought and pillaged - often makes it hard to see them as a "hero" or good guy and as a result, "hard to watch" even though it is fiction. Like watching a western with cowboys slaughtering Indians. Never cared for those either. As we know the depictions are frequently closer to "what it was like" more often than not. So for me - the more brutal = I tend not to enjoy so when possible I avoid. But that is just me. Sooooo glad I was not alive back then as you said - "This movie will make you appreciate where we are today". And I do, I just wish Humanity had a better track record than what it is. I took a History of Film course in College and even Comedy [the Prof. taught] is based solidly on "Man's Inhumanity to Man" !!! I was an unbeliever. . . . and then I kept watching comedies with that in mind and was shocked. Most comedians do weigh heavily on that spirit. Very few do not. Check it out and see if you agree. I bet you will! Appreciate all your hard work and insight.

Keep in mind, that "Vikings" were pirates and explorers. Not to be confounded with Norsemen in general.
@shadowfox4529
2 жыл бұрын
@@youtubevoice1050 That's something so many people have a problem grasping, even when they say they are so into history. The Norse weren't a unified kingdom and only shared a common culture. They were a warrior culture yes, but were also human. Pretty much everyone in that time period acted like that, some worse than others though, and yes Christians were doing the same thing. Calling a Norseman a viking is like calling all muslims terrorists at a basic level. The Norse probably were more likely to call themselves after whatever part of the North they came from, like the Jutes in Beowulf from the island of Jutland. Even in 2022, so called history lovers wouldn't let go of the rape and pillage image, even though they did so much more as a culture, which in turn inspired a lot of the Lord of the Rings.

Sjón who writes the manus with Eggers wrote the lyrics of Dancer in the Dark with Björk. They have worked together since the punk era. They are part of an artistic collective called Smekkleysa/Bad Taste which still is active and I think that record label always is mentioned in most of Björk's work. Sjón is a poet and novel writer but he did i.e. a well known musical performance called Luftguitar here in Iceland with his collective. Should be on KZitem. Worth watching. He also wrote the manus for the film Lamb that got an Oscar shortlist nominee. If you want to see Björk in her first punk band find the documentary Rokk í Reykjavík by Friðrik Þór Friðriksson. It’s definitely Robert Eggers film but a little (and I mean a little) more for mainstream. It was well put together and it was very Shakespearean (as mentioned by Grace in her review). It was brutal in places, the cinematography was great and it was well acted. I don’t know how it cost around $90m to make though. I don’t know what the rewatch ability is on this. I am from Northern Ireland and it really was great to see it was filmed here and see our coast lines etc. Though I do appreciate it wasn’t a mindless revenge movie and it has stuck with me. I don’t think it’s going to appeal to the casual movie goer, nor do I think it’s making it’s money back. They don’t make movies like this & probably won’t after, and I guess that’s a shame. Why would anyone want to live in a differnet time period? If you're going to hop in a time machine, go to the future.

🎶🎼 *_La Música_* 🎼🎶 Since 2021, I'd wondered what kinda score/soundscapes *Robin Carolan* _(the former Tri Angle Records)_ and *Sebastian Gainsborough* _(Vessel)_ would compose for the various scenes throughout this tale. If there is wonderfully fitting passionate/powerful music, it is good that the trailers understated drum patterns haven't given anything away at this early point. I definitely liked/loved Robin Carolan's work on Björk's _'Vulnicura'._ 🎶

Bjork famously had such an awful experience filming dancer in the dark that she swore off acting.

I hope this does well. It looks really good. Great cast plus it looks authentic and atmospheric. The cinematography is going to be excellent. Can't wait to see it

I'm just amazed they didn't try to sneak a black female into the movie.

Then you know nothing about vikings if you think that, that would be out of place.

@@colonyofrats4193 The already have made a Viking movie with a black female. The show is literally called Vikings.

@@williamswill4972 that black female on Vikings Vahalla was a white male in real life. Plus the show isn't historically accurate. Netflix did the same thing with The Witcher (which is based on Slavic culture and mythology). They cast Black, Asian actors instead of Slavic actors for the roles. I am Slavic and I felt so insulted and angry. People called out the showrunner on Twitter for this for not respecting Slavs and their culture.

Thats what they did in Vikings:Valhalla were Caroline Henderson plays Haakon Ericsson(Håkon Ladejarl). Its an insult to my people and our history. Whats next? Shaka Zulu played by and Asian?

The trailer for this movie really reminded me of the viking anime Vinland Saga.
