In most mathematical settings, 0^0 is simply defined to be 1. The reason most people take it to be undefined is because the intuitive "exponentiation is repeated multiplication" description naturally results in a 0/0 case or because the intuitive "exponentiation is commutative in its domain" idea fails if we try to assign a limit for 0^0. However, from most mathematical perspectives it makes more sense to assign it the value 1 from a group theoretic, category theoretic, and set theoretic viewpoint rather than just by appealing to intuition.

When I was a kid, I imagined the numbers had personalities whenever I’d do math. They were in a school setting. The odd numbers were the kind of outcast/misfits whereas the even numbers were the popular rich kids. 5 had a crush on 4, and 4 would lead him on. Number 2 was pretty cool for an even number and he, along with 1 and 3, would try to tell 5 to steer clear of 4. However, 5 never listened. 4 would eventually break his heart by being like “jk LOSER” and she and 6 would laugh and mock him for ever thinking he had a chance. The “older” numbers (7, 8 and 9) all got along decently because they’re more mature and scoffed at the petty drama 4 and 6 caused. Anyways, great video.

@vivekataylors5156
2 жыл бұрын
Actually, it makes a lot of since that 0 would stay the same in multiplication/division but change in addition/subtraction. Because essentially the problem 0x1=? says: "If you have 1 set of nothing, how much of something do you have?" or "How many total apples are there if there's 1 empty basket?" Whereas with addition/subtraction, the problem 1+0=? reads like: "If you add 1 of something to nothing, how much of something to you have?" or "If I put 1 apple in an empty basket, how many apples are in that basket?" These questions apply with all other numbers too. 2x3=? ("How many total apples are there if there's two baskets with 3 apples each in them?") 2+3=? ("If I add 2 more apples to a basket that already has 3 apples, how many apples are in that basket?") But this was not me patronizing you. This was just explaining that 0 does appear strange if you don't think about the word problem behind it. :)
@BlueSoulGamer
2 жыл бұрын
The only place I find it weird is division. I understand it means there are no divisions and thus 0 and the division symbol cancel eachother out. It’s just hella confusing for no reason, maybe it’s the way my teachers told me throughout the years but it just never made sense to me that a number can cancel out a sign.
@vivekataylors5156
2 жыл бұрын
@@BlueSoulGamer So, I think your teacher was explaining it okay, but the other way I think about it is much like how I explained multiplication above. You'd think of the word problem associated with the equation. Such as 2/0=? is asking: "I need to fill 2 baskets up with an equal number of apples. There are 0 apples on the table. How many apples can I put in my baskets so there is an equal number of apples in both baskets?" Obviously, since there are no apples to begin with, the answer's zero. Thus, you'd tell this person, go check another table. A math equation by itself is often confusing when you don't understand the context of what the equation is asking. A teacher of mine in elementary school used to make us write the word problem that corresponded with the math equation and vice versa. It helped me understand the meaning behind equations better than anything else ever taught to me. Before this teacher, I often associated word problems separate from math equations. After this teacher, I understood that word problems were the long version of a math equation. (Edited because I'm stupid and was explaining the word problem of 2/0 when I wrote down 1/0. Sorry.)

Zero: "what's you... divided by me?" 80085, master of mathematics: "considering that the line f(x)=1/x approaches infinity as x approaches zero, it would stand to reason that since lim(x->0) for the function, the closest thing that exists to a meaningful value for 1/0 is infinity, a byproduct of the fact that, like infinity, zero is less an actual number that exists and more of a useful mathematical construct"

Determined Helicopter That's why I said 'the closest thing to a meaningful value'. This is mostly because because math isn't real and neither is zero

But which infinity? Positive infinity higher than all real numbers? Or a positive infinitessimal lower than all positive numbers and fractions but more than zero?

@@worthlesshuman5041 sometimes I take a strange approach. You say math isn't real. I say things are as real as how many percent of existence they existed in. Dinosaurs might be more real than humans, it depends on us. But by this standard humans will probably be more real than math and math will be more real than money.

1 making sure Infinity is okay: Infinity, who am I? Infinity: Two! *Universe collapses again* In case you don't understand, if you consider that x/0 = Infinity you may use the distributive property and come to the conclusion that 1 = 2.
