This video is very informative. I think that the problem, however, is multifaceted and some of these issues are not being discussed. For example, We have stringent re-entry laws that prevent capable and qualified nurses from coming back into the field after possibly having left the field for personal reasons. There are re-entry education requirements, the cost of application to re-entry program fees, background fees, insurance fees, and licensure fees. These can run into the 100's to thousands of dollars. This can be extremely costly for someone who is not making a nurse's salary due to being away from the field and lost of licensure. Another issue is that nurses tend to "eat their young". As soon as a nurse becomes seasoned enough to teach others, the desire to leave the field may prevent them from teaching due to the hard time that is often given to inexperienced nurses the first few years of their entering the field of nursing. This has happened to many nurses I personally know, including myself. The profession has to look at what we want to change and why. Although the re-entry program was designed to ensure the safety of the patient from nurses who are coming back into practice, it is deterring them from coming back at all. The clinical hours, the financial costs, and self-paced education are very time-consuming and costly. There has to be a different rule- set for those who are coming back due to a lapse in payment for a license versus those who have had their licenses stripped from them for nursing infractions. Otherwise, we are bound to not see enough increase in numbers. We have to change the mindset of older nurses who demean younger nurses when mistakes are made and try to help the younger nurses so that they are more proficient at their jobs. We have to create incentives to keep nurses in the field- including higher pay, education opportunities, loan reimbursement opportunities, and better benefits for all nurses- including agency and adjunct educators in nursing. There has to be a willingness to create drastic and immediate change or else we will not meet the demands that are soon to come. This also means creating better policies that do not penalize us for not having enough funds to pay for our licenses or make it impossible to re-enter due to years of having to take care of one's family (for example). ;)

The nursing shortage is a farce, there would be better wage growth if there was an actual shortage. Hospitals will just continue to short staff their hospitals even if there is a shortage. I have been hearing about nursing shortages my entire adult life. It doesn't ever seem to actually be a shortage. My hospital hired 375 new grads just this year. They prefer new grads because they are cheaper. They do not care about patient safety.

I've been at the bedside for 30 years, I'm beginning to wonder if we, nurses, have promised society too much, more than we can possibly do. I'm also beginning to wonder about the term "burn out", we are overworked to the point of "abuse", and our response to this abuse, "I don't want to keep doing this to myself!", I would consider a "normal" response to the way we are being treated.

The job is stressful already, I wish the Nursetonurse bullying would stop. New graduates needs support. Staffing agencies should not be pushing RNs around

Chafe at the idea that bedside is only entry level, that APN is the goal. Also irritated that MSN is all pinnacle. I wanted to study sociology and was denied tuition reimbursement. As long as nursing inbreeds, limits what a nurse can think it will be in decline. Life balance must be stridently guarded for ever nurse, every shift by every DON. The fact staffing ratios have to be enforced by law is indictment to management. The fact there are only 2 nurses in Congress is an embarrassment. Firmly believe my health was majorly degraded by the jobs. Wish there was a better metric than attendance when judging a nurse 'good'

LoL, oh well....... honestly, I tried to be a nurse but it's too stressful and not worth it.... I know it also depends on where you work, but it's just too much and there are other jobs where the pay is more and less stressful, also less children being born due to contraception and abortion = not enough people to take care of the elderly.

There is no nursing shortage. One problem is they don't want to pay to train a nurse who has experience in another area and would like to apply for another position......believe me I know. That is one reason nurses get burned out
