I think the reason why wolves are commonly used as villains comes from culture. Be it real wolves or werewolves, we have to remember there was a time before guns and barbed wire where people had to be wary of what creatures may be lurking in the woods on their travels or may come to their farm. And Wolves are some of the most effective predators, because they live in large packs and are incredibly intelligent. So if a pack of wolves during the days of King Arthur decided to attack a caravan to get at the horses, there was almost nothing that could be done. So in the end, with the threat of predation, many myths and legends about the wolf, as well as fairytales and aesops using the wolf as a villain, it just became accepted that wolves are just bad animals, when they're really not.

Death in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish also has a behavioral trait from real wolves, he likes the chase. Wolves are really good at long distance running, wolves also know their prey isn't as good at long distance running. So wolves will try to scare their prey into running, and they won't let up until their prey collapses from exhaustion, which makes it easier to kill. Wolves also will stop trying to hunt prey that doesn't run away, because that means the prey is strong enough to defend itself. So the choice to make Death a wolf goes deeper than "Wolves are predators, and they look scary." It's not just that, but also because real death behaves a lot like how a wolf hunts. Death chases after you the moment you're born, and it slowly catches up until you're too tired to fight against it. Puss didn't respect Death until his 9th life, then after spending the rest of the movie running from Death, he's forced to face it. After the fight, Puss didn't just stop fearing Death, he came to terms with Death and his own mortality. Death wanted to kill the arrogant legend that thought they could get away, but that wasn't the person he was chasing anymore.
@zest2.5

So, The way you approached this is from a totally different light, that I did not really want to see it from. The part About how wolves inherently hunt I understood and someone else also pointed that out too but how death chases someone from the day they were born is one I don't think i gave too much thought. Death as wolf in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish potentially comes from the the current day depiction of death, the Egyptian God Anubis, The Greek Monster Cerberus and most relevantly the Scottish and Irish fairy Cu Sith. Cu Sith are said to be a messengers of Death who take lost souls to the afterlife and appear as large Dark Green, Back or White Dogs. The original Puss in Boots story may have been inspired by another figure from Irish and Scottish lore the Cait Sith or Fairy Cat.

Jimmy Crystal being a white wolf is probably meant to represent his standing as a mogul. White wolves are often imagined as regal, noble and wise. A single speck of dirt on a pure white surface is hard to remove and can easily ruin it's appearance. The Bad Guys was a near perfect deconstruction and analysis of this whole wolves = villains trope. It acknowledges that being born a wolf, Mr Wolf has had the title of 'villain' automatically bestowed on him, so he adopted the mindset. I think the answer is actually very simple, because wolves are scary looking, I mean let’s face it, in any movie in which the main characters are talking animals the personalities of these characters are pretty much always based around what kind of animals they are, rabbits are typically nice, sharks are mean and yes, wolves are scary, and it’s admittedly a lot easier for us to buy into these characters if how they look also reflects their personalities, I don’t think a wolf character having the personality of someone like say Pumba wouldn’t feel right, especially since a lot of these stories are primarily aimed at children, and yeah, if there’s any group of people who associate the personalities of talking animals with their look more than anyone it’s children

This might even be him trying to make light of the fact that he's deeply scared of them, considering how we know he copes with his own fears by numbing himself to it. One of the games to best use this archetype/trend of wolves being antagonists is the Wolf Among Us. You play as the protagonist of the Big Bad Wolf, or Bigby Wolf in this version, and he's appointed as the Sheriff of "Fabletown" (A town full of Fables, so think like Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Pinnochio, The Hare and the Tortoise, etc.) set in the 80's. It tackles on the idea of trying to be handle being the Sheriff of the town/doing your job to help Fabletown the best you see fit while also being feared from everyone because you're the Big Bad Wolf, who ate a lot of people back in the day. It's a pretty interesting concept, as in Bigby's prime he was known as THE bad guy: the Big Bad Wolf, and now he's trying to show that he's made a change (or not depending on what choices you make in the game). Sorry if those bundles of words seem a bit too much, it's way too hot in my room and I feel like I'm about to melt into my chair. If you're interested in the concept though, I'd recommend playing through Wolf Among Us, as well as it's upcoming sequel coming in 2024 (as of what the studios said for it's release date).

I think a lot of this as an idea came from the Bible. The concept of a wolf in sheeps clothing and not leaving the flock lest you be devoured by a wolf and many other wolf is villain esque stories are a theme throughout the whole thing. Not because God sees wolves as evil, just because they’re predators. Same with calling humans His sheep. It’s not in a derogatory way, just a metaphor for His followers. And because the Bible is a pretty popular book with a lot of influence on humanity the ideas just carried over into fairytales, some of which are Bible stories retold. And the trend continues to today. Snakes are also in the same boat, seen as no good tricksters because of Satan and the forbidden fruit. Again, not because God hates any animal. Just either as a metaphor or as a reference to Satan’s most famous trick.

another reason wolves are villains so often involves some fundamentals of character design. round characters tend to be seen as cute and sweet (like Baymax), Square characters tend to be seen and characterized as sturdy and reliable (like Garnet), and triangular characters are seen more dangerous. Wolves tend to be very easy to design in the triangular shape and Death from puss in boots is a great example his body shape is fairly sharp, his snout tappers decently hard, the fluff on the side of his head comes to a sharp point, and his ears and teeth are natuarly sharp. Most of these traits are just overly exaggerated traits that real wolves have leading them fairly nicely to the dangerous arc type. this arc type just happens to be most used for villains.

When it comes to certain animals always being portrayed as villains, a lot of it stems from real life events in the past. Farmers have long viewed wolves as enemies due to packs stealing their livestock. It got to the point that the Yellowstone population in the US nearly went extinct because agriculture began booming in that area, and humans wanted to eliminate the threat to their animals Additionally, while its reputation generally varies by what you look at, certain myths and religions also view the wolf as a malevolent beast, or otherwise something to be feared. For example, in Nordic myth, the wolf Fenrir was believed destined to eat Odin at Ragnarok, while his children Sköll and Hati would eat the sun and moon, respectively

I don't know if zest is going to see this, but there is somewhat of a deeper meaning to why Death is a wolf in "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" Death (The Big Bad Wolf from the movie, not "the real Grim Reaper") takes the form of whatever its prey fears the most. Puss in Boots is most afraid of wolves, and since Death (from the movie) only takes the lives of those who fear him, it takes the form of a wolf in order to make Puss more fearful. (Because again, Puss is afraid of wolves.) So basically, "Death" takes the form of a wolf because Puss is most afraid of wolves, and "Death" will only take the lives of those who fear it.

Something else I should say is that Death hates those who do not value life, which is also the reason that he decides to take Puss’s last life early (as he says when he reveals that he is Death). In the main fight scene on the star, Puss says that he is fighting for his current life, and when Death hears this, he lets Puss live the rest of his last life. Although the wolf may be sadistic, he is not malicious.

I can see why wolves were villains in fairytales, way back when, when wolves were a problem and people may have lived around them more than today, of course adults would make wolves scary to keep kids and youth away from them. Them being villains just comes from that today. Now that they aren't a threat to us today as they were years and years ago, we don't see them as being awful (though we respect their ferocity and still understand they are dangerous). When my daughter was 3 and 4 years old, she had a real fear of wolves, and I think it mainly grew from the wolf attack scene in beauty and the beast. She would pass certain books by because it had a wolf on the cover, and would have bad dreams with wolves, and dreamed that wolves broke into our house. She refused to get off of her bed, I had to carry her through the house to prove that there were no wolves in the house. So I would say our ancestors' goal to keep youth away from them was met with my daughter. She's older now and not scared at all, so she's good now 😁

Many people have a dog or has someone in their family with one so dogs will be familiar to most audiences members. Sheep and wolves(both 1 &2) The females don't hunt, so they don't even get to partake with the other bad wolves. Even in the weird Alpha and Omega movie. It’s not just a prevalence of wolf villains, it’s carnivores in general. In nature, it’s the herbivores that tend to be far more aggressive, especially large ones like moose, buffalo, and hippos. Yes, carnivores kill for a living, but they have to be extremely selective in their target, otherwise they risk severe injury that could quickly lead to their death. I would really like to see a lot more herbivore antagonists, not even just in anthropomorphic characters, but even in films where the antagonist is just the animal itself.

1st I like your sign off message. 2nd along with the other great comments, I think the uncanny valley and our tendency to attribute human characteristics to animals plays a part in why wolves are villainized. Wolves are related to dogs, but instead of being affectionate and/or disciplined companions, wolves are wild and powerful. From this we project the human motives of impulsive viciousness and malice, chaotic and evil, when they are just trying to survive and do their thing like most animals. Because of our bond with dogs, the antagonism we get from wolves can feel like a betrayal. Something that looks like a friend but acts like an enemy wanting to devour you is scary on mulitple levels.. Lions and bears are also powerful predators but we expect it of them and they are out in nature so we don't project onto them as much as we do to wolves and other wild dogs.
