I think it's interesting Vallee and Keel both come to basically the same conclusion while studying the phenomena from different angles.

For the record, the film version of "The Mothman Prophecies" was released in 2002, and was only the loosest adaptation of Keel's original book. The film followed some of the events documented in the book, but did so in a fictional narrative. Additionally it either minimized or completely excised many of the phenomenon from the book, most notably the UFOs that were sighted over Point Pleasant in 1967 and the "Indrid Cold" entity. Its not a bad film, but don't look for a faithful adaptation of Keel's work there.

I love John Keel; have read all but two of his books. I think he can be quite thoughtful but also quite entertaining (especially in Jadoo and The Mothman Prophecies) due to his roots in pulp adventure. I love how he embraces the wackiness instead of shunning it.

Yeah, I agree. I think his writing style is very informal on the surface but when you think about the potential consequences of what he is saying the results are very profound.

nibus9 Yes, Keel definitely felt that there was something going on behind the scenes, or in this case behind the limits of our senses. As you write, sections of Lash's Not in His Name certainly read like that as well.

I never find Keel dismissive of the phenomenon. Much of what he points out about monsters, ufos and ets seem consistent with ufo reports from around the world. It seems also to share a parallel with interacting with entities during occult rituals, or rituals to influence an outcome. I think he didn't go into what he was implying thus far (being not done with it yet but quite impressed thus far but having enjoyed his other works) . If one considers modern knowledge, the observer can exert effects on the observed by the act of observing, but there seems to be a negative feedback where something from the superspectrum returns a signal . The idea of leylines having something to do with it is convincing, but then this doesn't explain why all of a sudden a ufo flap stops, unless the arc of occurrence is on the scale of hundreds of years. Can't quite shake the notion of a sort of trickster archetype behind it. I suggest that what it is may already have access to the human mind and even as far as occultism goes, things seem to manifest with some added twist. Even more interesting are the experiencers, some of whom have a turn of belief or paradigm shift, so whatever lies in the superspectrum seems to have direct access to the human mind with no knowledge. Even more peculiar is how the modern phenomenon is framed as extraterrestrial rather than gods and mythological spirits...why the shift? It seems to be mirroring something in the unconscious of the human collective. We moved past the age of gods and superstition into the age of space. As he points out the things are NEVER around for long periods. I always wondered about this. Modern ufology is a cult, with interviews of people, fake whistleblowers and personality cult like researchers talking about hidden bases on earth and whatnot, and the alien religion seems absurd which makes Keel's works in general quite welcome. What modern ufology does, ancient man did with gods, and recent man did with spirits such as elves, elemental, and what have you. I don't think we ever will or did truly know what it was and i think that be part of the design of the thing, to obfuscate any and all possible truths we may think we know. I don't so far get the impression of disappointment from him, rather of what logically seems an acknowledgement of the futility of seeking. Thus far what he brings up with monsters brings to mind how people never truly catch them (why would they want to is another question) . It seems to be playing a game which does have very real world consequences, and it perhaps has done so since we grew smart enough to use language. My interpretation of his is that immersing one's self in pursuit of the ufo and winged humanoid phenomenon (or it least that seems to be how he began) leads only to speculation but no solid truths. Ufologist and experiences alike will believe what they want, but the point is belief, I have yet to find any suspension of it which also is why i enjoy this read; he tends to keep a distance even though he presents a model (superspectrum) by which to classify it. I tend to have gathered such notions of the paralleles between daemonic intelligences and "extraterrestrials" primarily after experimentation with Aliestar Crowley's Lam (being a sinkhole in and of itself which was not beneficial in the long term) . The ufos always reminded me of the so called ectoplasm of graveyards and paranromal photographs , and such balls of light can be seen before one intends on doing a magickal ritual before one even begins. I dunno if he goes there, but some of this has what I suspect is a an unconscious human capacity for the superspectrum to use to manifest things into this reality, given the idea we are a part of it. Also interesting are his lectures on Men in Black which suggest to me that somehow in the future we are able to somehow channel or use the energies of the superspectrum for time travel, because it still stikes me as odd that somehow the ufo phenenon involves them at all. Also of note is it's relation to death and how clusters appear before natural disasters or events where a lot of people perish in the same area. There's something seemingly foreign but very human to all of the phenomenon considered paranromal or high strangeness. Ghost probably are projections manifesting fleetingly on an impression the superspectrum receives by someone with a deep connection with the departed, but this also suggests a trickster like element of mimicry of mental impressions. Keel seems to by virtue of his thinking and researches hit something huge in my opinion, which we aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate or understand. I merely brush upon some very strong nagging suspicions I have developed after reading Keel and enjoying his lectures. To be frank , he has a more convincing argument than many for now.

And yet despite all of this study it leaves us all still wondering and speculating but for what? Are there no answer or any conclusions? Perhaps this is exactly how it's all played out and how it must be, for our own sake I suppose! I enjoyed your observation from another cirious observer

The trickster force definitely makes sense because it's the only way to explain murphy's law, which some of us experience everyday and KNOW it cannot be coincidence or random chance. No one wants to touch this subject. Only Keel and a few others have. There does seem to be a perverse force that keeps trying to trick us into disappointment all the time. Others here like Matt McKinley and Howdie Mickoski talk about it a lot too. Plotinus of Neoplatonism also said that matter is like a mirror that inverts everything and tries to deceive us constantly.

I'm not sure the gods are totally evil though. They seem to be parasites that feed off us by creating opposite forces to generate friction and harvesting energy from it, the same way a battery works. To them it's just business, nothing personal. We are a human energy farm and sometimes that farm must be harvested, and that's why we have unnecessary wars like the ones that are going on now. The original Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove" is a great illustration of this. Of course the gods love to trick us too and seem to get off on it as well. The Babylonians knew this too. Only the Abrahamic religions claim the gods or God are perfect and all good, which makes no sense and doesn't fit what we see in this world at all.

I haven’t had any of these kind of encounters. Most of my “paranormal” experiences have been in the fields of telepathy, precognition and synchronicities, matters that could very well be linked to obscure mechanisms of the mind that are yet to be understood. I sometimes hope and wish to have one encounter of the other, weirder kind, but then I remind myself that I should be very careful about what I ask for. Casper the friendly ghost is, after all, just a cartoon.

One thing is to talk about the supernatural and another one is to experience it when you least expect it… and I state this because of my own personal experiences and yes, I agree, some doors are not meant to be open, you might not like what comes through. And if you find yourself going through an opening done not by your own hand or intention, find yourself and love yourself enough to ask for help from that emanation of pure love that is the spiritual being and person of Jesus Christ. It will not fail you ever, regardless of how fallen or undeserving you might think about yourself. Ok to dismiss this advice but keep it hidden on the somewhere inside you, in case you ever need it.

Like ants can be play things to us for the ants better or worse, depending on who is observing the ants. If ants are subjected to human morals good or bad responsible or irresponsible, are we not subjected to the games of higher beings and the live admiration and curiosity of higher beings. Beings that we would give a human form to. Possibly they might take on geometric hyper dimensional infinite shapes. Shit

Not the Hunter Thompson of the Occult, the Paranormal prehaps. Please be aware of saying "You Know" repeatedly, it's quite annoying, especially when said before one is actually informed of what it is we are supposed to know.
