Big Shout Outs to Jeff @2HacksGarage @terrygrover6440and Andy Wood @UnityMotorSportsGarage for their extensive knowledge of these 385 Series BBF's and to Jeff (a Mopar Man) for jumping out of his comfort zone to try something as challenging as a Ford! They all have some AMAZING stuff, and I'll tell ya, they are 3 of the best guys you'll meet in U-Tube-U.
Ford casting numbers from the 60's up are really easy to decipher, but they don't always mean what you think they mean. This is when the design (mold) was made. So it was quite common to buy a brand new 1977 Ford with a D1VE (1971 engine block) & D3VE (1973 heads) on it...... because they where still actually making those "designs/castings" for these model years of car's and trucks.
Now.... all makes and models do this (GM, Mopar, Ford, etc etc) this is just how Ford does it, and it's a tad confusing. The issues that make this EXTREMELY difficult is when it comes to ordering parts for Fords...... because Fords are very VERY very specific on what fits what.
For example, you can take a set of 1955 Chevy 265ci heads, and bolt them onto a 1985 Chevy 350ci and they fit. You can take a 1966 Chevy power glide transmission off a small block 327, and bolt it right onto a 1989 big block 454 Chevy (just have to change the TC & Flywheel). Same bolt pattern. Chevy rarely changed, and when they did, it was slight changes that still worked with everything else.
Ford..... you can't do any of that, because they changed designs ALL THE TIME to the point that sometimes it was in the same model year, they use 2 completely different parts (distributors on a 5.0L for instance). So it makes ordering parts for a Ford extremely difficult, because the VIN on the dash, year, make, model, engine size, etc etc doesn't give you the info you need to get the parts to do what it is that you are looking to do, unless you REALLY do your research & know your Fords.
Back in the day, we had actual "parts stores & dealers" that knew this and or where given the MASSIVELY huge Ford Parts Catalog in order to get you the right parts for the application you where working on, or trying to achieve. Now days...... you are left to your own devises to do your own research, because those Parts Stores are going to the way-side, or you are stuck with ordering off the internet, and "hoping it fits" when it finally comes in.......
....... yeah, Fords are the most challenging to Hot Rod (IMO), and with the ever shifting times, they are getting harder and harder to do because of all their oddities and multiple design changes that don't fit anything but what they where originally intended to fit.
Guess that's why I have such a "Love Hate" for Ford..... Henry Keeps Me On My Toes, and when I get sloppy, or take it for granted, he takes a BIG bite out of my wallet.
I hope this helps some of you out there, and I really hope to see each and everyone of you at the #NoNameNationals this coming Spt 30th and Oct 1st. Where we can all meet face to face and talk about the trials and errors of choosing what we do..... lol
