Wow I haven't listened to The Offspring in a long time. Great breakdown. Fun fact: the lead singer/songwriter Dexter Holland has a PhD in molecular biology!

One of the most popular songs of the late 90s (came out in 1998). I remember when MTV played this video every hour. 😄

I've always loved The Offspring and the thing i like the most is that, despite their main singles can be considered somehow cheesy pop-punk (despite extreme quality and being great, great songs), in most of their albums 80% of the songs have that layer removed and become just great Punk.

I would say this song is a critique of the Baby-boomers who had all opportunities in the world handed to them and they closed all doors to the next generation by enacting selfish policies. Compare the decade before the 90:s when this song were released, the the upcoming decade. The damage to America done by globalization started in the late 1990's, but is was not as apparent as it is now.

If you haven't reacted to their song "Why Don't You Get a Job?" yet, you should do it next. It's from the same album and is one of the most popular Offspring songs.

3 years late and this prolly won't be read by anyone but regardless, Dexter has said this song was written after he returned to his childhood home, on the same street he grew up on and when he looked in to see what happened to his old friends from the neighborhood, one had OD-ed on drugs, another was in prison, another dropped out of school after getting pregnant and lived in poverty, another commited suicide...He was so shocked and heartbroken that this song just flowed out of him.

You were close, yes this is about dreams being lost. But it is about American Gen X ers who thought they could do anything being raised in suburban America.... They were not disadvantaged in any way, but perhaps disadvantaged themselves.

The offspring is awesome. I want you to do “Hit That” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 but the video is weird and has NOTHING to do with the lyrics with bad computer graphics to boot 🤣🤣🤣 please do that song but do the album version. It’s message is so funny and terrible 🤣🤣🤣

Absolute hymn of my youth! Such a great song musically and with very well written and relatable lyrics. Love it! Most of Offspring songs are more on this serious side but they also got a lot of light-hearted, punk-pop (and because of that more commercially sucessuful) sounding songs like Pretty Fly. They always have one or two songs like that on their records. For example the album with Pretty Fly only had one more song in that style (Why Don't You Get a Job) and were the two most successful hits of that album, but the real Offspring are tracks like this one. Try "Gotta Get Away" or "Come Out And Play". Peace.

Such a great song. Simple message, but well written and arranged. The video was probably great at the time, but like most MTV 90s/early 2000s ear videos, didn't age well. The song is a classic though and always on my playlist.
