I was 16 that summer and doing my yearly visit with my grandparents in Missouri when we saw the news report about this case. To this day, all these years later, I still remember my grandmother putting her hand to her mouth and gasping and then her coffee cup hitting the tiled floor of the kitchen. Her reaction was so emotional and so unexpected that I have never forgotten it. She said "those poor baby girls" and she was crying. My mother was her only child and I think she was reacting the way she would have reacted if it had been her daughter, and not someone else's, who had been murdered so brutally.

They don’t deserve life in prison. True they are sick but what the hell do you think prison does? I did case work for inmates and families as release happened. I had more than one person tell me prison tight people one of two things, how to be alone and or how to be a better criminal. I don’t know what the answer is but even a life sentence is only 30 years for most and violent offenders have to meet 85% of their sentences and given that I know people who got locked up for robbery who got more than the average sexual offender, so chances are “life” is a lot less than you’d think. The killer who escaped from prison just prior to the attacks, had previously attacked two women and brutally raped them. One lived to tell. It was done by Mr. Hart, the killer. The woman told police that when he was raping her, he was making a gutteral moaning noise, just like he did that night at the camp. That's what the counselor was hearing on that rainy night.

This in my opinion is 100% incompetence of law enforcement and a complete perversion of the justice system, they kept the trial in the offenders home location causing bias, the offender fled custody twice prior and there was no consideration for his prior offenses when being classified as an in-custody inmate, and lastly the crime scene was trampled on. If the OSBI and the state of OK has any decency, they would exume Harts remains and test further DNA, if his families wont allow, time to go the genealogy route with GED Match. I grew up with this case. We lived just an hour from Locust Grove....on HWY 66 . Every year the news would report on this case. I was the same age as the oldest victim being 10 years old. Our church changed lakes to take the youth to because of the Girl Scout Murders. Leroy Hart was Native American something I'm glad was not brought up in this short documentary. Folks said that the police were "racist" looking for an escape goat. Mr. Hart was seen as the "victim" ....not those three innocent girls....despite his history. It's almost unfathomable how some said he "only" raped those two pregnant women....but didn't kill them. Infact his funeral was widely attended. I hope those that felt sorry for this murdering child rapist... feel guilt & shame for supporting him. Being a mother of two girls (now grown women) my heart goes out to Mrs. Farmer. The counselor who heard that sound has since worked with a team who had her listen to various sounds to try and determine what she heard. She locked in on a doe grunting at a fawn. And given the time of the year that wouldn't be out of place in the middle of a wooded area in Oklahoma. The women Hart plead guilty to SA in 1966 never mentioned Hart making a sound (one of the women was even asked during the pre-trial in 1966 about noises and sounds she could hear since she was allegedly blindfolded and not once did she ever mentioned Hart making an animalistic sound while under oath.)

@@MitziHart DNA didn't exist in 1979 when the trial took place. However, when it was developed in the 80s they tested the evidence and failed to produce a useable DNA profile and thus the results were reported as inconclusive. They retested in 2008 and again came up with an incomplete DNA profile and in fact reports were made that unknown female DNA was found (which has since been swept under the rug with 0 explanation). The recent attempt conducted in 2019 (reported in 2021) was also unsuccessful in producing a useable DNA profile and was again reported as inconclusive. All of the relevant circumstantial evidence was presented to a mostly white jury (11 of the 12) and none of the jurors were from Locust Grove. They didn't believe the State of Oklahoma's evidence proved Hart was the killer or that it was only one killer. A few of them went on record stating so. While I agree with you that Hart's 1966 crime makes him a POS, it doesn't instantly make him guilty of this crime and I believe other people committed the crime. Most notably former Mayes County Sheriff Paul Smith's suspects one of which was related to the 2 squirrel hunters who "found" the evidence at Cave #1 that led the OSBI to lock in on Hart making him the primary suspect.

Actually, I think it worked perfectly. They tried to pin the murder of three girls on a man with circumstantial evidence. The jury didn't buy it and so they acquitted him. Doesn't mean they thought he was innocent, just that the state failed to prove his guilt. The DNA evidence in this case has also failed to prove his guilt as they have not produced a complete DNA profile from the evidence to compare to their suspects. The case is now in the hands of the Cherokee Marshal Services, and they are investigating suspects that were ignored by the OSBI in 1977.

That’s a very naive perspective. More deaths have been caused by predators on the internet than creepy rapists outside girl scout campgrounds. That’s a serious and real comparison. More deaths, and also terrible influences on young minds, are current terrible consequences of kids spending so much time on devices. Being outdoors is not dangerous. Unsupervised camping in the woods is dangerous. Either way children need constant supervision whether outdoors or on the internet. But death counts and abuse has increased because of kids being on the internet.

This is one of the stories I heard as a kid that I still think of when I go camping at 47 years old. I have panic attacks walking away from camp to take a pee by myself and I remember the tragic story of those 3 little girls come in my mind and I start thinking I hear and see things in the woods ready to get me and run back to camp. I will never camp alone. I know that's all I.d think about. I'm not crazy and I'm not a wimp. I'll pick up a Rattle snake or fight anyone who comes at me. I've had guns put against my head that I took from a person trying to rob me. I'll swim with Alligators. (I'm a Florida Man. We are a little dumb but we are usually not cowards. But this one story I first saw something about in 1981 when I was 5 will scare me to death for life. Plus I'm a Dad of 2 son's I couldn't live if something like that happened to them. May God Bless their families and those counselors. I'm sure the guilt they felt still hurts. LEAVE KIDS ALONE

Can you imagine the girls had just pulled up to camp so excited and not even 24 hrs later they’re loaded back on bus with deafening silence 😢

They weren't told what happened and were clueless until arriving home. One of the books about the case says the counselors told the girls the camp had to close down because of a problem with the water supply.
