Early settlers in the Southwest would often build a tower or "torreon" in the center of town as a defensive post during raids by local Indians. One such tower can still be found in the old frontier town of Lincoln, New Mexico. Used as early as the 1850s for protection against Apache raids, it would later play a role in the 1870s in a protracted war that pitted some of the West's most infamous characters against each other, including James J. Dolan, Alexander McSween, Lawrence Murphy, and of course Billy the Kid and The Regulators.
