@@desertplantsofavalon Thank you so much, Lyn, very much appreciated! I agree with you about the much easier access these days to information about our cactus and other succulent plants!! Yep indeed, hahaha, your story about begging your Mum to be taken along to the library to check out for books on cacti, that sounded so incredibly familiar!! I saved up several months of my pocket money to then order my very first "Cactus Book" in a little local book shop (...why did I not have the link to Amazon handy then? LOL) ...it took almost a month to arrive after ordering - but I read it completely, from the first to last page in less than a week, 😂🤣 Enjoy your Sunday afternoon and evening, also best regards & wishes to Hans!! Makes me a little sad though as I’d love to have my dad’s entire collection still, the majority of those plants would be 30+ years old now and some would be absolutely massive today. I have A Cactus that I Bought in 1994.! Unfortunately due to it Falling Over, I had to Cut it in Half and Repot it. Which I Luckily found out how to do from One of your Videos.! My 1994 Cactus is Still Growing Bigger and I will have to Move it from Out of the Kitchen Window Sill soon. Because there is only a few inches to go, untill it has reached the Top of the Kitchen Window.! It is 27 Year's Old now But Still Younger than I am.! I have recently Bought another Cactus that looks like the Ones in the Deserts. I Watered it when I got it Home and One New Leaf/Pad has Already Started Growing much Bigger than it was when I Bought it.!But it does have Brown Spots On it and my Oldest Ones has White Spots On it.! What Causes Brown and White Spots On Cactus.? Does Anyone know of a Cure for Brown and White Spots On Cacti.?
@desertplantsofavalon
2 жыл бұрын
Thats fantastic that your cactus from 1994 is growing so well, and yes haha it becomes a dilemma when they grow too tall for the windows, I think your new cactus may be an Opuntia 'prickly pear' variety as these types of cacti are very prone to the brown and white spotting on their pads, I have this happen to a lot of my Opuntias too, there can be two reasons for this, the first one is due to a harmless condition that causes the pads to get circular brown and white corky patches, I think it can be caused from a change in environment and is harmless and more of an aesthetic thing, the second one is due to scale insect and they are a pest that Opuntias are very prone to getting, the spots can look very similar and the best way to find out if its due to scale insect, is to see if the spots come off easily when they are rubbed with rubbing alcohol or if they can be scraped off easily, scale insect will melt on contact with the rubbing alcohol, but the harmless spots will stay put, scale insect also is more raised looking spots than the harmless spots are, if you are unsure what the spots can be it may be best to treat the whole cactus with a couple of treatments of Neem oil to be on the safe side, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

Dear Lyn! Thank you for video! I see the shape of desert cactus changes as soon as it becomes older and older, they become wider at the top and part that is close to the roots becomes thinner. Your braziliopuntia reminds me of a book I read as a child, Life with Mother, by Clarence Day Jr. Mother had a rubber tree, which was the pride of her life, although the rest of the family thought it was rather ugly and dismal. It grew too large for the house and had to be kept in a nearby greenhouse in winter until it outgrew the greenhouse. Then it was donated to a botanical garden. At one point, it had to be laid on its side to fit in the greenhouse, which is not a good idea for a rubber tree but might work for a dormant cactus. You would have to have it bone dry so that it wouldn't try to grow, because any growth would be sideways, which would leave you with a twisty trunk as it straight up in summer.
@desertplantsofavalon
2 жыл бұрын
WOW Emmit :-D you have given me a very good idea with laying the tall Braziliopuntia on its side haha, I never thought of this before but it would definitely work especially as we have a lot of unused floor space in the polytunnel during the winter, it can also work for the big tall 8ft Trichocereus too, it would be so much better than having to keep moving them every spring and summer from the staircase outside and then back into the house for winter, thanks so much Emmit for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX
