I can appreciate the vision, but the dogs depicted in earlier artwork look much healthier and more functional than this breed. Sure, the dogs look powerful, but they also look as though they’d collapse after a few minutes of work! The Corso, in my opinion, is a much better representation of the ancient ‘war dogs’.

If you look at Guaglione the 1st recognized neo mastiff in America in the 1940's he looks like a modern cane corso. People and breed registries have sadly pushed this dog and others into different directions than their original purpose for whatever reason

Compare this with nowadays 180+cm and you will see the difference. If you do not believe me than please go into first military museum to see how big we're uniforms of soldiers in WW1 and then compare these with clothes ancient Roman gladiators wore but be aware that in old Rome gladiators were true giants compared with ordinary people. This dog was never ever war dog because it is too slow which if understandable thanks to elephantine size and metabolism.

First off-these won't live very long, hence breeds like kangals were bred to live a long time so that they could be worked for longer. Secondly- they look nothing like an actual war dog, war dogs would have looked more like a cross between a pitbull and a lurcher, with a thick dense coat and about a couple of inches of fat to protect them from the elements and opponents. Their mouths would have been like a Kangal or a pitbull, or something in between. Very inaccurate. Finally, they would have to be able to reach up and grab someone, or an animal like a bear or a leopard, remember this is the Middle East and Greece, historical ranges of these animals, then grab them and drag them to the floor. These dogs shown would not have the strength or the energy. This is just cruel.

This last is a "recreation" not the original war dog which was trained in harsh conditions and has a fierce temperament towards the wild predators like lions, hyaenas, leopardos, etc. The modern american molossus it's just a poor mix of Neapolitan and English mastiff with several problems like a lot of wrinkles, clumsy movement and breathing difficulties. My current one I am fostering is my first Neo Mastiff that was horribly abused before it was rescued. I have had him for 7 weeks now and at first though at 120 pounds he was massive even with him being just skin & bones underweight at 120 lbs. however somehow, I got over that and now he is just another dog, so the size of the dog issue you do get over quickly. In 6 week's, I now have the Neo's weight up to 130 pounds and his personality is coming around and soon should be ready for a forever home we hope. While A Molossus is a fantastic dog, and a perfect fit for me, I think I will keep a eye out for what I really want, a big (over 125 pounds) red male French Bardo Mastiff. There so ugly you got to love em. Because of its long existence and development, the breed is extremely healthy and enduring. Few examples live outside Greece, mainly in the Balkans. Get the name right my American friends.. This dog is just a mix of Neopolitan Mastiff

The baggy skin means that when another animal bites them they will almost certainly end up with a mouthful of skin rather than vitals. It suggests a good sense of smell. The animals appear to be overheated.

Sorry but this 'recreation' is akin to painting over the mona lisa with homer Simpson. The ancient fighting dogs of rome looked nothing like this. They were athletic and moderate, the romans would ill recognise this mass of skin, folds and eye problems. Glad to see other people agreeing with me though, usually its just me banging the drum on the extreme mastiffs videos

I completely agree. This isn't even a breed; at best it's a "designer dog". To create a breed it takes pedigree selection and progeny testing. This dog has all the worst traits from it's ancestors. A real Mollosus would be a working breed, clearly this is not. From the looks of it, he doesn't have enough property to do a proper job of breeding. The more progeny you can raise, the stronger the line will be, and a small house in the suburbs is not enough property for that. One male is not enough genetic diversity to create a healthy breed.

I like how they're only reacting to comments that don't mention the fact that this dog is unhealthy and only say stuff like "omg now that's a big dog 😱😱" Also the fact that this guy thinks that this dog is a fighter is hilarious there are plenty of dogs smaller than it that have much more drive and dogs like the Indian mastiff or Caucasian ovcharka which are both much smaller than it would without a doubt be able to best it in every single physical and probably mental category including strength hell the cane corso would probably have a good chance of taking it down But hey at least the guy pumping these things out for money is trying to be funny not without tooting his own horn of course

@@chiararosati2162 Samoyeds do plenty well in agility, carting, flyball, tracking, mushing etc... and were originally bred for hard work in the coldest locales. The current breed standard differs little from their origins. They are plenty functional. Just not in hot climates/hot seasons.

@@UltimoDogLover I have never seen a Samoyed in high level sports or jobs, they are intelligent and beautiful dogs for sure, but differ quite a lot from the old type (also they were mostly shepherds than sled dogs, at least that's what I know). It has not to be like a show line gsd or pug to loose functionality, an example is the beauceron. Except some lines they are way too big in comparisons with real working beauce, but you hear all the time, from show breeders, that they are still very rustic and true to the old type

Kinda cool that these old world dogs are being brought back. It's an interesting project for sure. I feel like they need to be lighter though? Honestly the closest you can get to the famous statue of the molossus of epirus is... The greek shephed. They come from the same region, and do the same work the molossus used to do 2500 years prior. Alabai also seems like a good match.
@Jean_grey159

@@clementbeziat7198 I agree with this 100 percent. It needs to be able to protect. And unfortunately these dogs look like they can barely function. It's a pity because I think it would be pretty incredible to 'resurrect' an ancient dog breed. The biggest issue with this dog is definitely its mass. They're built like trucks and look unhealthy in my opinion. Same with the English mastiff. Just my opinion. I'm from South Africa, so I'm used to Boerboels and although they're bulky they are very athletic and affective guardians.
@clementbeziat7198
3 жыл бұрын
@@Jean_grey159 Yeah, boerboels still have some very nice working bloodlines that would be perfectly acceptable replacement for the molosser of old. I myself am from France and our national dog is the Patou also known as great Pyrenees in english speaking country. Tho they are often presented as very capable livestock guardians the truth is that, once the wolf was eradicated, they were almost only bred as pets and, now that the wolves are coming back, it is made clear that the breed lost its "edge" and that most dogs are not suited to work anymore. Some lines can still be great but they are often mixed with other LGDs wich in my opinion is good. A working dog is supposed to do the work, not conform to some arbitrary standard made by people whose life does not depend ln the efficiency of their dog. Now, if a dog that used to be the best LGD of the country for centuries can loose it's edge in a few decade of questionable breeding, i guess it says a lot about the working capacity of the "ressurected molossus".

WOW!!! As I see this MOLLOSSUS DOG at about the 4:41 mark, I am just in LOVE with that HUGE DOG who's head is about as big as LION's head. Most of us who have been kinda "into" the really HUGE and "jowly" breeds of dogs have been used to seeing a handful of breeds who have been representing those "types" of dogs. I have seen a few dog breeds before that are usually thought of as being the most common of the really " ferocious looking breeds" and/or most HUGE HEADED, and the most LOOSE SKINNED AND JOWLY breeds. BUT, I am now kinda waiting to hear just how these HUGE MASTIFF and MOLLOSSUS dogs end up doing when it comes to listening to human beings that want to walk them as they are on a leash in an area that is populated with human beings. I have personally had a Newfie and Lab mixed dog. He had been about 185 lbs, so, he did get BIG, BUT, he had NOT been of the genetics that any Mastiff and MOLOSSUS dog had been. My Newfie mixed dog had been a VERY sweet dog. However I DO want to learn all about how the dogs in this video would do in a situation where a family with a few people would need the dogs to be GOOD and accepting of those 3 people, plus also accepting of maybe 4 people who are friends of those 3 people. I am kinda thinking that adopting the HUGE POOCH before the POOCH is a full grown adult pooch, and making sure that any people that are going to be frequent visitors to your home or any other place that you are going to want your dog to be aware of that will possibly need to be guarded by him or her would just be the best plan. I am going to end THIS comment and start a NEW one. These dogs REALLY are just so fascinating to me.

Unfortunately not when it comes to a dogs health. This American Molossus would not have survived the old world in my opinion it would overheat and wouldn't be able to hunt at all. In my opinion.
