Nestled along the shore of the Merrimack River sits a historic red barn in Amesbury, Massachusetts. What appears to be three of these barns haphazardly put together, the shop remains the oldest continuously operating wooden boat shop in the country. With large white lettering reading “Lowell’s Boat Shop” visible solely from the river’s view, there’s no question that history seeps from its walls as you approach this glimpse in time.
We had a chance earlier this February to visit the shop and experience the tradition of wooden boat building that is Lowell’s Boat Shop. From sitting down and chatting with Head Boat Builder, Graham McKay, to carving our own handmade oars it was wonderful taking a step back in time to see what Lowell’s has prided itself on for so many generations.
