Some nice tips and tricks right here! I'll add one that I've found to be very useful as well. Pre drill your bracket mounting holes, then put a countersink on the back side. When screwing into drywall, it has a tendency to mushroom out around the screw. This can make getting your bracket flush to the wall pretty tough sometimes. The countersink will leave room for the drywall to push out and make for a nice tight fit against the wall, ensuring your shelf never wobbles.

That burnisher technique for gapped mitered corners is Brilliant. I usually address the issue a number of ways depending on the project, but a burnisher bending in the wood fibers to close the gap makes perfect sense. Thank you!

One thing about teak wood is that the grain will try to move your drill bits. Has anyone worked with teak . I built handrails another time with teak to commercial specs . I cannot tell you how many times I have watched "experts" on TV and youtube using a Brad Nailer or Finish Nailer just like you mentioned...including myself following along and getting a nail that ricocheted into my finger. So my lesson for today is to hold the nail gun in the right direction so when it does ricochet, it does so inside the wood. Such an obvious answer for the problem...but until you said it...it had never clicked for me. Thanks. PS: Filling that gap was a great trick to learn as well! I'll look forward to watching more of your vids.

It looked like simple pine uses for the actual shelving. Maybe 1x8? And to fasten to the frame it looks like he just screwed in a few screws from the top into the frame once it was all together. You can see him do it to the first shelve he hangs.

great idea for big bulky shelves. all my customers seem to want them to be thin , like 1 1/2 inch thick to 2 1/2 at the most so the 2x4 construction with 3/4 material as a wrap would never fly.those things are like 5 inches thick! I install steel in the wall attached directly to the studs and either build a thin hollow shelf to slid over or have to drill very precise holes into solid lumber.it is always a pain in the ass, I do not know why so many people are in to "floating" shelves, seems like every job I do involves at least a few.

what did you do to fasten the shelf to the frame?
@oobaka1967
7 жыл бұрын
Fastening the shelf to the frame doesn't require much. I'll bet not much more than a single screw at the back in the center from either above or below depending on the position of the shelf in order to hide the screw. I made the exact same type of shelf a year ago only mine was a lot beefier. Mine was 24" deep and 52" wide and attached to the wall using three 1/2" lag screws each 4 inches long. You could park a truck on it
@ryanpenir8253
7 жыл бұрын
oobaka1967 nailed it...or screwed it...anyway, yeah, I just used one screw in the center which is more than enough if the cases fit snuggly over the frames. If not and they're "loose" just use more screws to snug it up. Hope that helps!

What about using a giant lag bolt, then you crank through both ends of the inside skeleton directly into the stud behind, then you could crank it tight, install the front cap to hide the hardware? also if you installed a wood slab just drill a hole through make a pocket for a washer to fit into, make a plug to cover

I actually filmed that part but edited it out due to time. I'll be posting new quick tip videos every Tuesday called "Two Minute Tuesdays" with that coming right away. But in short, if I'm going to use stain, I just use drywall compound or spackle. I know it sounds weird but it's the best thing I've ever found. If I'm just clear coating it I'll often use glue and fine sawdust or Famowood Wood Filler. Hope that helps!
