Competitive play is for hardcore deck builders and people who own a large assortment of cards/can afford to buy a large assortment of cards. New players want to: 1. Play casually without any stakes. 2. Collect good cards cheaply (not pay $50+ for a single card) 3. Be able to play without having to slave away learning every intricacy of the game in order to build a deck thats viable in the current meta. Being thrown into the deep end and being told “just build a deck” when you still have no idea how many lands should go in any given deck….. not very inviting. Thank god they sell preconstructed commander decks and starter kits. A new player has EVERY reason to avoid the sweat of competitive magic and go straight to arena with a code to upload their starter deck, and then start slipping cards into their deck as they go along and unlock them, And then hopefully they do the same with the physical deck (Recommend they upgrade the commander precon deck, because standard is dead…. Feel free to throw some of those starter deck cards in your commander deck) Competitive play simply needs a better, more beginner friendly community, Instead of, lets be real, looking for noobs to stomp because y’all are bored of playing the same old meta decks against eachother. The real fun is in commander, with things like Planechase. I side with the new players. Screw competitive play. Its what gives the game a bad wrap. Remember richmond crackstyle? Yeah, those are competitive players…… another reason to avoid, right? Right…. Pants up, and play casually, in a way where everyone gets to have fun instead of just one player🤙
@blujay1294

@@nicks4802Yeah, even with me getting a touch bored of commander, I still don't want to touch modern (the only other format lets be real), due to the insane meta, insane deck costs (I don't like proxies, I like having my actual cards, but not the worst), and then, obviously a smaller and more abrasive community. Yes, for a short period of time like about a year or so, before DCI shored everything rules-wise, people would love to ask Richard Garfield to alter cards. Since in 1993/early 94, during the ABU, Chaos Orb was a junk card so it was a good candidate for signing. A huge chunk of the Chaos Orb story that you're missing is how Chaos Orb suddenly became a tier 1 tournament card. At one time the Power Nine was Black Lotus, the three blue cards and 4/5 Moxes (not Mox Pearl) and Chaos Orb. Not every deck ran Ancestral Recall, Time Walk or Time Twister. Not every deck ran Sol Ring. But every single deck ran Black Lotus and Chaos Orb. It was restricted in constructed play because it was so good. There was one player who is responsible mechanically as to how the Orb is flipped nowadays and now we either have have that flip, or we have small tables rules...no flip, just destroy one target permanent of your choice.

Ultra Pro was late to the game. They shouldn't be part of this story. Penny sleeves to hold single cards (along with top loaders, semi-rigids, screw downs, etc. ) existed since the 80s since baseball cards had begun to be collected seriously. Before Ultra Pro, they had nasty PVC 9-pocket sheets from many brands and many penny sleeves from many sources...just as so many different sources produced comic book bags and boards. In Los Angeles, we had access to a special kind of soft penny sleeve that was much wider, thicker in plastic and a bit cloudy...they were always sold out of the dufflebag of a certain French player who was nicknamed "Frenchy" and thus these sleeves were known as frenchy sleeves.

I own a Chaos Orb. Took the store I bought it from 4 months to find a copy, and its a CE, though personally I love gold border. Its special. One time years ago, friends of mine let me use Karn the Great Creator to wish for the Orb in a game of EDH (we let wishes work the way they were intended in our play group). I then played it and followed it up with a Darksteel Forge. Since Orb was made before sacrifice as a mechanic was created it would destroy itself on use, but since it was indestructible I could just spam activations. Though I used the Oldschool 93/94 errata that makes chaos orb solo target while still requiring the flip, it was devastating and won me the game. Very fun card, and I use my two 93/94 decks to teach new players as they are well balanced against each other. Its a really fun format, even if I have to proxy some power.

Awwww well that's BS. The urban legend used to be: "A guy playing for a huge MTG tournament was at the finals, he pulls a Chaos Orb, reads the text, finds a flaw in the text, so he rips the card into pieces and throws them all over his opponents creatures and wins." But he was disqualified? That sucks! Childhood ruined! Many years later, Wizards created a joke card called Chaos Confetti, which actually contained text which required you to rip the card into pieces and throw it at your opponents cards to destroy them. But now that we all know the true story, that just ruins everything.

This is so weird. I picked up a chaos orb 5 days ago. The first one I have owned in well over 10 years. I was a certified sniper with that card. I could hit enchantments off of my creatures! I was also a dick with it. Had a deck that could drop the orb 2-4 times a round consistently. I wouldn't attack until my opponent had NOTHING in play.
