Max fleicher (the creator of the show) was a total boss. He was one of the only people back then who really didn’t give a dam about what society wanted, he was the first person to hire a woman as an animator, he openly worked with black singers, and he was also Walt Disney’s biggest rival at the time. Which may not sound a lot but back then, seeing a woman work in what was essentially a “mans job” was unheard of. he gave people a chance regardless of their gender or race, Where others saw failure he saw talent and wouldn’t you know the people he worked with turned out to be really good at what they did. AND not only did he inspire change in the animation world and beyond he also inspired a new gen of animators INCLUDING WALT DISNEY. Which later turned to be his biggest rival and later best friend.

There is unfortunately a lot of misinformation going around. Baby Esther was not a black woman, but a black child, she was 10. The looks of Betty are inspired by Helen Kane. Helen claimed she was Betty and sued the creator. They used baby Esthers voice in the courtroom to show Helen wasn't the first one to do scat and sing in a baby voice. Baby Esther was one of the many examples used in court. She wasn't an inspiration for Betty but a piece of evidence in a courtroom. Baby Esther didn't look like Betty at all, any photo's of her you find on Google that do are not her. There are a few authentic pictures and they will show you a normal 10 year old little girl.

@@PrincessofKeys it is largely a myth. Betty Boop is inspired by Helen Kane. In court it was found that the film of Esther Jones which was supposed to show her using the contested singing style and catchphrase well before Kane, was actually found to have been made in 1928 when Jones was around ten years old, seven months after Kane had already been using the "boop a doop" catchphrase, and only showed Esther Jones singing Helen Kane's own songs in Kane's style. Also, women who were paid to voice act for betty boop confirmed they were chosen based on their ability to impersonate Helen Kanes voice & style and had to practice based off of Helen Kane’s performances. Betty boops image physically resembles the exact look of Helen while not looking anything like the real Esther Jones (there is fake images floating around of her.)

So to sit here and say that it was only Black people is really sad and undermines the tens of thousands if not millions of children who were sexually abused molested or God knows what else because their parents were so desperate to make money. To undermined that fact and make it only a black problem is really undermining a really dark period in history where all children of every race and creed were being sexualized, mistreated and even sold because there parents could not afford to take care of them any longer due to the Great Depression.

This is actually a common misconception - Mandela Effect maybe? Max Fleischer actually said on record many times that Betty Boop was originally drawn as a caricature of the singer Helen Kane (look her up. You’ll see the resemblance) The idea that “Betty Boop was originally Black” is also false; the original character designs for Betty actually portrayed her as an anthropomorphic French Poodle. The Esther Jones connection comes from a court case. In 1932, Helen Kane sued Fleischer Studios on the grounds of infringement, arguing that Betty Boop was a clear caricature of her persona and should not be able to generate money based on her likeness. One of her arguments was that her scatting style earned her the tagline of “The Boop-Oop-a-Doop Girl.” The studio’s defense, however, brought in producer Lou Bolton, who argued that Kane was not the only performer singing in that style, and that Esther Jones had been performing that way before Kane. He went on to provide evidence that the two performers had crossed paths in the Vaudeville circuit. The result was the case was thrown out, as Kane was unable to prove that any part of her act was her intellectual property. There’s no evidence that Fleischer ever met or witnessed Esther Jones perform.

Ok let's settle this once and for all. Baby Esther's line wasn't "boop-oop-a-doop", it was "boo-boo-boo" and "doo-doo-doo". In 1928 Helen Kane allegedly watched Baby Esther's cabaret act, at this time i believe Kane was around 24 years old and Esther was around 9 years old, after watching the act, Helen liked it so much she decided to take it and just change it up a bit and use it as her own thing, her version was the "boop-oop-a-doop". Esther did not resemble Betty Boop at all physically, not the hair, not the clothes, none of that. Betty Boop's likeness was inspired by Helen Kane probably, and since she does the famous "boop-oop-a-doop", i think it's safe to assume that was also inspired on her. Sooo... Basically... Betty Boop was inspired by a white woman who stole the gimmicks of a *child* who performed at cabarets.... That's pretty crazy. Also Betty's first appearence was of an anthropomorphic bulldog, that's why she has earrings, they used to be her ears but them became earrings.
@dandantsm6560
Жыл бұрын
So basically people think the creators said they were inspired by Esther and not Helen Kane because of the whole court situation, but actually they just used Esther as an argument like "you can't accuse us of copying you if you didn't come up with", but they did get inspired by Helen Kane, that's why Betty has the hair and makeup and eyes she has.

@thewrongmusic5017

This is almost true, but not quite. Esther Jones never said, "Boop Boop a Doop", or claimed to. When Helen Kane started the lawsuit, Fleischer Studios didn't argue that "boop boop a doop" had been used by Esther Jones, they argued that it was a generic scatting noise, similar to other jazz scatting before it, and not copyrightable. They used Esther Jones as one of a few examples, since she was a popular singer who made similar scatting vocalizations, but she would say "boo boo boo" and "boo-did-do-doo". They argued that Helen Kane had likely seen Esther Jones, and been inspired by her act, but it's not known if she saw her or not. Scatting and jazz in general do come from black people, so, in that sense you could still argue that Helen Kane and Betty Boop were inspired by Black people, and they achieved a level of success that Black jazz singers had a harder time achieving. However, I don't like that Esther Jones is remembered as the "real Betty Boop". She was famous as a little girl, so it doesn't seem right to view her exactly the same as Betty Boop, who was always meant to be a sexy flapper girl archetype, and very sexualized. Calling her "the real Betty Boop", has erased who she really is. Your video is one of the more accurate ones, but so many use fake images of adult women in Betty Boop cosplay, or unrelated jazz singers and call them Esther Jones. If you google "Esther Jones", you'll find pictures of her with a Betty Boop watermark on them. People seem to think posthumously forcing her into the Betty Boop image is what she would have wanted, but there's no reason to think that. She never even testified at the trial.

For every one in the comments quarreling about who created edges - I'm not quite sure who created the style, but I do know this👇🏼 It was a French dancer, singer and civil rights activist (American born), who went by the name of Josephine Baker. She was born in 1906 and was one of the pioneers of the "layed edges" style which caught light in the 1920s

Betty was actually based on Helen Kane who was actually inspired/stole the style of singing by baby esther so in reality Betty wasn’t never based on baby esther herself but if it makes y’all feel any better Betty boop’s cartoons and the Fleischer studio as a whole were very open with diversity in that era

@@Fatima-kp8hiThe creator of Betty Boop claiming that Esther was the inspiration was very clearly a court move. Baby Esther stopped performing in her teenage years, and did not resemble Betty Boop at all other than the similarity in their hair. Second, Baby Esther did not invent the iconic nonsensical catchphrase type of lyrics. Luis Armstrong did, and plus it was a trend at the time. Baby Esther's performances features the lyrics "boo boo boo" and "doo doo doo", which Helen took inspiration from and eventually changed it to what is now Betty Boop's catchphrase. It is not theft, most modern pop songs share more similarity than this. Lastly, Betty Boop resembled many different women at the time, and was also inspired by the general fashion back then. It's unfair to give all the credit to some random performer that may have been one of those women.
@catsinskates

@@Fatima-kp8hiBetty Boop looked nothing like Baby Esther. You can Google it. She was a literal child. There's fake images of her as a teen dressed similarly to Betty Boop. But she stopped performing before she was that age. Helen Kane looked and sang like Betty Boop. The reason Baby Esther was brought into it was because Helen Kane tried to sue the creators of Betty Boop, so the creators basically said "Actually there was another singer who did the "boop boop a doop" thing first so you don't have the rights" (the singer being Baby Esther) The truth is many singers of the time did the "boop boop a doop" line (known as scatting) and they used Esther's line to avoid getting sued. She didn't even say it exactly like that, hers was more "boop boop boop" This is basic searchable information, though it's hidden under a bunch of misinformation. OP wasn't trying to make themselves "feel better" they were simply stating the context of the situation. I'm black and I acknowledge this, just in case you wanna pull that card. Please touch grass.

The OG Betty Boop was originally a dog, believe it or not! 😂 She looked similar in appearance to Goofy, with long basset hound type ears. However, that concept only lasted a few cartoons and those are hard to find now. She was quickly shaped into a sex-symbol human, as we know her today. Also, fun fact, she was originally a secondary character, being a cigar lady in a nightclub.❤

Betty was originally a background character, and a humanoid French poodle dog so she could be the love interest for the main character, Bimbo. She also wasn’t directly based on Esther Jones, she was based physically on multiple famous women of the “Flapper Era” such as Helen Kane and Clara Bow. The idea that she was “supposed to be Black” is a misunderstanding of a lawsuit in which Kane accused Fleischer of using “her” act and appearance to the detriment of her own career, to which their rebuttal was that she herself had copied her singing style from Jones, and that Betty’s appearance was based on Clara Bow, a white, red-haired silent film star - a similarity shown in Betty’s only color appearance in the ‘30s, “Poor Cinderella” and later used in the design of Jessica Rabbit, while Betty appears in the same scene in her black-and-white form. The black haired version of Betty is a much later design from her ‘60s revival.

Yeah! so it’s most commonly associated with baby Esther due to a lawsuit that occurred where a notable artist tried to sue the production company for stealing her likeliness, and they defended their character design Betty Boop by using test recordings of Baby Esther singing “boop boop boop” saying that she was part of their inspiration along with a couple other artist at the time who testified saying they sang in baby voice . This isn't news to me anymore, but I grew up occasionally watching classic cartoons like Betty Boop, Casper, etc and when you're white you're obviously not naturally educated on these matters so you even grow up to perceive a character like Betty Boop as white. I'm mixed hispanic, but I got my mom's light skin (and, due to divorce, was raised by that white side of the family) so i'm practically white with all the ignorance with it to overcome. I remember finding out about this history of Betty Boop and thought it was so crazy! Not in the sense that it angered me, but more like it's crazy that they couldn't have just made her black to begin with. But even I was taught enough history in school to remember the racist time period Betty Boop came from and why it wouldn't have flied. Seeing this makes me want to make a fanart of her as the lovely black woman she should have been, but I'm afraid of opening too many cans of worms. I don't typically draw poc because (although I do have hispanic blood, have been around my dad's side of the family plenty of times, & have a love for not just them, but latino/chicano people in general) I don't know the different ways of life of these different racial cultures and i wouldn't want to risk misrepresenting them.

I feel like saying white = ignorance is a really terrible way to look at it and describe your circumstances. You just grew up in a certain environment that didn't expose you to that history. Drawing poc shouldn't be excluded to that specific race because I think it just does way more harm than good since people can learn about cultures and be respectful about the way they go in their art. Even if you get things wrong it's the thought and effort that matters if you've had good intention behind it.

@@OnionMilker hate to say it, but if you are white then chances are extremely high you have had some level of ignorance towards what matters affect poc. I'm sure that isn't a 100% guaranteed case if you're parents always kept you educated on the way marginalized groups are treated, but don't conflate ignorance with racism (which is what it seems like you're doing. If not then forgive me) I never considered myself a racist. In fact, I learned about the slave trade at a young age and hated what the African and African American slaves went through. It did not make me hate myself or other white people, but I hated racism. However, I also had realized over the years just how much I still didn't know because of the white bubble I was stuck in. (White friends, white media, white neighborhood, etc) Ignorance is not exclusive to white people, but we have our own kind of ignorance that I feel it's healthy to recognize.
